Privately owned by the original family and private equity firms, the company provides innovative solutions for industries including defense, offering products such as radar absorbing materials and custom-engineered materials through confidential collaborations.
Summary:
The Assistant Lab Manager supports the QC Lab Manager in overseeing daily lab operations, supervision of shift lab technicians and maintaining quality control and safety standards. The position sets the daily priorities for the laboratory and ensures that auxiliaries and instrumentation are always available. This position sets priorities, meets deadlines and interacts with personnel at all levels of the company.
Essential Job Function:
1.
Supervise Laboratory Operations:
Oversee daily lab activities, including sample testing, and analysis, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures. 2.
Quality Assurance and Control:
Ensures that laboratory instrumentation and documentation are exceeding site Quality Assurance requirements by performing quality control checks, reviewing test results, and maintaining accurate records of operations, chemical usage, and safety data sheet. 3.
Staff Management:
Train, mentor, and supervise laboratory personnel, assign tasks, and ensure staff competency in analytical techniques and safety protocols. Make sure that laboratory schedules provide adequate personnel coverage for testing samples. 4.
Technical Duties:
Provide analytical support for sample testing using techniques such as XRF, TGA, pH, particle size distribution, gas chromatography. Provide occasional weekend coverage to support laboratory operation. 5.
Troubleshoot Equipment:
Identify and troubleshoot any issues or deviations created by material testing or laboratory instrumentation. Ensure that equipment redundancy is maintained to minimize instrument downtime. 6.
Record Keeping:
Maintain detailed records of process parameters, production volumes, and quality control data to ensure traceability and continuous improvement. 7.
Safety Compliance:
Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and team members. 8.
Instrument Maintenance:
Plan all instrument preventative maintenance and calibrations by scheduling external and internal activities in a timely manner. 9.
Customer Interaction:
Address all internal and external customer questions and complaints quickly and thoroughly to ensure that issues and concerns are resolved and communicated. 10.
Housekeeping:
Ensures that the laboratory appearance meets those standards set for housekeeping and is tour ready at all times. 11.
Other duties as assigned:
Task to support company success as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. 5 years hands-on experience in an analytical lab. 2. 3 years leadership experience, preferably in a laboratory setting. 3. U.S. Citizenship. 4. Superior communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, attention to detail and problem-solving skills. 5. Proficient in Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). 6. Exceptional technical skills, analytical ability, judgment and strong operational focus. 7. Self-starter; highly organized; efficient.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Supervision of six hourly technicians working a rotational shift schedule. • Must be available to provide occasional weekend support.
Education:
A 4-year degree in Science or Engineering. (Significant relevant quality experience may be substituted for a 4-year Degree.)
