JOB SUMMARY
The Administrative Director of Laboratory Services provides strategic, operational, financial, and clinical leadership for laboratory services across the Maury Regional Health system, including oversight of all hospital and affiliated laboratory locations. This role is responsible for establishing a unified vision and operational structure that promotes high-quality, standardized laboratory practices across the system while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. The Administrative Director serves as the senior laboratory operations leader and collaborates closely with executive leadership, pathologists, physicians, nursing leadership, quality, infection prevention, and operational teams to support organizational goals, patient safety initiatives, growth strategies, and exceptional patient care outcomes. The role is accountable for system-wide laboratory operations, financial performance, workforce strategy, regulatory readiness, quality management, and operational excellence.
JOB DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS
1.
Provides System-Wide Strategic Leadership:
Directs laboratory operations across all Maury Regional Health laboratory entities and develops long-range strategic plans that align laboratory services with organizational priorities, growth initiatives, operational excellence, and patient care goals. 2.
Leads Operational Performance and Standardization:
Establishes standardized laboratory workflows, policies, procedures, quality systems, and operational practices across all laboratory locations to improve efficiency, consistency, service delivery, and patient outcomes. 3.
Ensures Regulatory and Accreditation Compliance:
Maintains organizational compliance with CLIA, CAP, TJC, CMS, OSHA, HIPAA, state, and federal laboratory regulations. Leads system-wide readiness efforts for inspections, surveys, and accreditation activities. 4.
Oversees Quality and Patient Safety Programs :
Directs comprehensive quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory services throughout all phases of testing. 5.
Provides Financial and Resource Stewardship:
Develops and manages system laboratory operating and capital budgets. Oversees productivity, expense management, revenue optimization, supply chain initiatives, equipment planning, and resource allocation to achieve financial targets. 6.
Leads Workforce Planning and Talent Development:
Oversees recruitment, retention, succession planning, leadership development, and workforce engagement strategies for laboratory leadership and staff across the system. Promotes a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth. 7.
Drives Operational Excellence and Innovation:
Identifies opportunities for process improvement, automation, technology optimization, outreach growth, and service expansion. Leads initiatives that improve turnaround times, operational performance, and customer satisfaction. 8.
Builds Collaborative Clinical Partnerships:
Develops strong relationships with pathologists, physicians, nursing leaders, operational leaders, and external partners to ensure laboratory services effectively support clinical operations and organizational objectives. 9.
Oversees Laboratory Information and Technology Initiatives:
Collaborates with Information Technology and clinical informatics teams regarding laboratory systems, interfaces, reporting functionality, data analytics, cybersecurity compliance, and system optimization initiatives. 10.
Supports Organizational Culture and Leadership Expectations :
Demonstrates servant leadership and fosters a culture centered on safety, teamwork, accountability, communication, operational transparency, and continuous improvement across all laboratory operations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Healthcare Administration, or related field Required Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field Required Certifications/Licensure Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/MT) certification through ASCP or equivalent nationally recognized certification Required OR Tennessee Supervisor License, if applicable Required Fellow or advanced laboratory leadership certification Preferred Experience Minimum of seven (7) years progressive laboratory leadership experience Required Demonstrated experience with regulatory compliance, budgeting, quality management, operational improvement, and strategic planning Required Experience leading hospital-based laboratory operations within a complex healthcare system Strongly Preferred Minimum of five (5) years senior leadership or multi-site management experience Preferred
