This role supervises laboratory technologists and support staff, manages workflow, and maintains communication with laboratory leadership. The supervisor ensures the smooth operation of the laboratory, the accuracy of results, and the safety of staff and patients. Key Responsibilities Supervision and Leadership Directly supervise all laboratory technologists and support staff on the night shift. Provide guidance, support, and training to ensure adherence to laboratory protocols and quality standards. Address performance issues and escalate to management as needed. Sample Processing and Results Ensure all incoming samples are processed efficiently and according to established procedures. Confirm that all sample testing is completed and results are accurately reported before the end of the shift. Oversee the documentation and verification of test results. Instrumentation Troubleshooting and Problem Solving Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues for all instrumentation in the clinical laboratory. Perform basic maintenance and coordinate repairs with vendors or service engineers as necessary. Document all instrument issues, actions taken, and outcomes to ensure compliance and continuity. Critical Results and Problem Management Promptly identify and communicate any critical or abnormal results to the appropriate healthcare providers. Notify the Director of Laboratory Operations and Medical Director of any significant issues, incidents, or deviations from standard processes. Document and escalate unresolved problems for further review. End-of-Shift Communication Prepare and send a comprehensive end-of-shift report to the Director of Laboratory Operations and Medical Director, summarizing shift activities, issues, and outstanding tasks. Ensure effective handoff to the incoming shift or on-call personnel. Staffing and Coverage Monitor staffing levels and ensure all scheduled positions are covered throughout the shift. Arrange coverage for any staff absences and communicate changes to the Director of Laboratory Operations. Maintain accurate attendance and shift records. Compliance and Safety Enforce laboratory protocols and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, COLA, OSHA). Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, 52-week military training, or related field (required). Minimum of 5 years clinical laboratory experience, including 2 years of supervisory experience. Strong knowledge of laboratory operations, quality control, and regulatory compliance. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues with clinical laboratory instrumentation. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and lead others Must have molecular experience MLS (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent required) Reporting Structure Reports to: Director of Laboratory Operations Works closely with: Medical Director, Laboratory Technologists, and Support Staff Work Schedule Be willing to work the night shift from 8 or 9 pm to 4 or 5 am Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods Manual dexterity to operate laboratory instruments Ability to lift up to 25 pounds Compensation PTO Insurance This job description reflects the general duties and responsibilities of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive list.
