Director of Operations / Executive Leadership About Us We are a physician-owned, independent medical group dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care through high-quality laboratory services. Our laboratory network includes a centralized core laboratory and 11 satellite physician office laboratories that support multiple practice locations throughout the region. We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Laboratory Manager (MT/MLS) to lead laboratory operations, personnel, and support services while maintaining the highest standards of quality, compliance, and patient service. Position Summary The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall operation of our central core laboratory and 11 satellite physician office laboratories. This leadership role oversees laboratory personnel, laboratory billing staff, and a courier team responsible for specimen transportation between locations. The ideal candidate is a certified Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist who is comfortable working as both a leader and a working manager. This individual must be capable of filling staffing gaps and performing bench work in departments including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and immunology when needed. Essential Responsibilities/Laboratory Operations Direct daily operations of the central core laboratory and 11 satellite physician office laboratories. Ensure compliance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, state regulations, and laboratory best practices. Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs. Monitor laboratory performance indicators, turnaround times, productivity, and service levels. Coordinate proficiency testing, inspections, audits, and corrective action activities. Manage laboratory equipment maintenance, service contracts, and vendor relationships. Oversee inventory management and supply purchasing. Technical Leadership Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for laboratory staff. Perform testing and provide bench coverage as needed in: Hematology Chemistry Urinalysis Immunology Assist with validation studies, quality control reviews, and implementation of new testing procedures. Ensure competency assessments and ongoing technical training for laboratory personnel. Staff Management Recruit, hire, train, schedule, coach, and evaluate laboratory personnel across all locations. Maintain appropriate staffing levels to support operational needs. Develop employee schedules and manage overtime and labor costs. Conduct performance evaluations and corrective action when necessary. Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and service excellence. Courier and Logistics Management Oversee a courier operation consisting of two company vehicles and courier personnel. Ensure timely and compliant specimen transport between physician offices and the core laboratory. Coordinate vehicle maintenance, inspections, and operational readiness. Monitor route efficiency and courier performance. Laboratory Billing Oversight Supervise laboratory billing personnel. Collaborate with billing staff to resolve laboratory coding, documentation, and reimbursement issues. Monitor laboratory billing processes to promote accuracy and compliance. Leadership and Strategic Planning Partner with physicians and senior leadership to support organizational goals. Identify opportunities for operational improvements and cost savings. Participate in budgeting, capital planning, and growth initiatives. Lead special projects related to laboratory expansion, workflow optimization, and technology implementation. Qualifications/Required Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field. Current MT/MLS certification through ASCP or equivalent. Minimum 5 years of clinical laboratory experience. Minimum 3 years of progressive laboratory leadership or supervisory experience. Working knowledge of CLIA, OSHA, and laboratory regulatory requirements. Experience performing testing in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and immunology. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Preferred Experience managing multiple laboratory locations. Experience in a physician-owned or independent medical practice environment. Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records. Experience with laboratory billing operations and revenue cycle processes.
