Videos Duties Help Duties/Tasks Performs a broad range of laborory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laborory technologist occupion. In addition, performs advanced and complex laborory procedures; recognizes deviion from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Evalues and solves problems reled to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis taking into account physiologic processes and requirements. Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laborory equipment. Uses, calibres, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laborory equipment. Diagnoses deviions in test performance due to instrument malfunction. Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions reled to test performance using stistical principles and theories of performance improvement. Adheres to practices and regulions governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. Identifies discrepancies, solves problems, and presents solutions. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results. Interprets results and suggests follow-up test selection or procedures. Evalues and implements new techniques and procedures in the laborory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using stistical methods and theoretical knowledge. Interprets findings and makes recommendions. Communices effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member. Provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, pients, and others). Gives direction and guidance using underlying principles of laborory testing. Organizes work and sets priorities to meet deadlines. Candides must meet one of the certificion options below: Generalist certificion as an MLS given by ASCP BOC or AMT. Generalist certificion as an MT given by ASCP BOR orAMT. NOTE
Cegorical and specialist certificions are not acceptable for CLS Generalist positions or lab sections unreled to the cegorical or specialist certificion held. Cegorical or specialist certificions are acceptable for higher-graded positions within the relevant lab section or one of the non-section specific assignments (including, Ancillary Testing Coordinor, Educion Coordinor, Laborory Informion Manager, Quality Manager, Laborory Manager, Regional Technical Specialist, Nional Quality and Compliance Agent, Regional Program Manager, Regional Director, Laborory Director, or Nional Quality and Compliance Officer). Exception for Non-Certified. Applicants who do not currently hold valid certificion may be hired by VA and actively work toward their certificion if they meet one of the routes identified in Appendix A th makes them eligible to take the MLS certificion exam through the ASCP BOC or the MLS certificion exam through AMT Certificion Agency. Non-Certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure may be given a temporary appointment CLS under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2). Non-Certified individuals may only provide care under the supervision of a certified CLS or above the FPL. Non-certified individuals may only be appointed the entry level and may not be promoted/converted until certificion is obtained. Temporary appointments of non-certified CLS may not be extended beyond 2 years or be converted to a new temporary appointment. Failure to Obtain Certificion. In all cases, CLSs must actively work to meet requirements for certificion starting from the de of their placement into the occupion. At the time of appointment, the Human Resources (HR) Office staff, in collaborion with the supervisor, will provide the employee with the written requirements for certificion, including the time by which the certificion must be obtained and the consequences for not becoming certified by the deadline. Failure to obtain certificion during this time period may result in separion from employment. Loss of Credential. If an employee fails to maintain the required certificion, management officials, in collaborion with HR Office staff, must immediely remove the employee from duties and responsibilities associed with this occupion. This may also result in separion from employment. Foreign Educion . To be creditable, educion completed outside the U.S. must be deemed least equivalent to th gained in a conventional U.S. program by a prive organizion specializing in the interpretion of foreign educional credentials. Gradues of foreign baccalauree degree programs meet the educional requirements if they meet either of the following: Foreign transcripts are evalued by an acceptable evaluion agency, and the degree is found to be equivalent to a NAACLS-approved U.S. clinical laborory science degree program. OR The applicant submits a letter from ASCP BOC or AMT sting the individual is eligible to take the certificion examinion.NOTE :
Possession of a certificion identified above automically determines the foreign educion as creditable and no further documention or proof of equivalency is needed.
