Job Description
The Lead Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing and analysis on patient specimens to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. In addition to performing high-complexity testing across laboratory disciplines, this role assists the Director of Laboratory with coordination of laboratory operations, quality assurance activities, and workflow oversight. The Lead Medical Technologist supports accurate test results, regulatory compliance, and effective collaboration with laboratory staff and medical providers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs routine and high-complexity laboratory testing across disciplines including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood bank, and serology. Follows established procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, and reporting of results. Maintains quality control by performing calibrations, documenting activities, and ensuring test system performance. Identifies and resolves issues affecting test accuracy and reports concerns to appropriate laboratory leadership. Maintains laboratory documentation and ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards. Communicates critical test results to physicians and clinical staff. Assists laboratory staff with troubleshooting testing issues and instrument performance concerns. Coordinates laboratory workflow and assists with staff scheduling and daily operations. Assists the Director of Laboratory with supply ordering, inventory monitoring, and operational tasks. Supports staff competency development, training, and adherence to laboratory procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
Required:
State of Hawaii Medical Technologist license. Knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, and regulatory requirements. Strong attention to detail, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Effective communication and teamwork skills in a clinical environment.
Preferred:
Experience in multiple laboratory disciplines. Membership in a nationally recognized medical professional association.
WORKING CONDITTIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting. Frequent use of hands and coordination for laboratory tasks. Requires strong visual acuity, including color and depth perception. Exposure to infectious materials, chemicals, and potential electrical hazards. Ability to maintain concentration and respond to urgent or emergency situations.
