Full Job Description Job Summary:
The MLS performs, interprets, and correlates laboratory procedures that require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Routine/complex testing will be performed across the major areas of the laboratory, such as blood banking, chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology, microbiology, or coagulation.
Responsibilities may include:
follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis; performs chemical, microbiologic, immunologic, hematologic, and immuno-hematologic laboratory procedures that require independent judgment; recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action; provides laboratory information to authorized sources; demonstrates laboratory technical skills to other laboratory colleagues. Tests are performed with the technical supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist, supervisor; Laboratory Administrative Director; and/or Laboratory Medical Director.
Functions and Duties:
Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver timely and accurate laboratory results. Performs all routine, batched, and STAT procedures within posted timeframes across Laboratory sections. Performs all maintenance procedures, as needed as, per protocols. Knowledge of and ability to perform quality control (QC), and demonstrates ability to monitor, document, and troubleshoot QC appropriately. Rotates through all departments of the laboratory as assigned. May perform inventory, maintenance, clerical duties, and other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education o Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution Experience 2 years clinical bench experience Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations o MLT, ASCP or AMT o or o Medical Laboratory Technician eligibility for certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as ASCP or AMT is required. Certification must be received within 90 days of hire. o
Preferred Qualifications:
Education o Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. Experience o 2-5 years clinical bench experience Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations o MLS (ASCP)cm or
AMT Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be established as a fully qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist Be able to work cooperatively with other healthcare professionals to promote a team approach to quality patient care Basic typing and computer skills Effective communication skills Demonstrates ability to make independent decisions Phlebotomy experience is desired but not required Function—
Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver timely and accurate laboratory results Performs all routine, batched, and STAT procedures within posted timeframes across Laboratory sections Knowledge of and ability to perform quality control (QC), and demonstrates ability to monitor, document, and troubleshoot QC appropriately Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens as appropriate; and is able to give clear hand-offs of work status Performs and evaluates testing on patient samples screening for acceptability and validity of results by differentiating and resolving technical, instrument, and physiologic causes of problems or unexpected test results Participates in API, CAP, and/or other proficiency testing surveys by testing and completing documentation as required Serves as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations Rotates through all departments of the laboratory as assigned Follows Laboratory policy regarding maintenance and troubleshooting for all analyzers Calls and documents critical and alert value notification in the LIS per protocol 3 pm - 11:30pm

Touchette Main laboratory Rotating weekends and holidays, covering other shifts as needed.
