Position Summary The Medical Technologist I is to perform histocompatibility testing, including HLA typing by molecular methods, PRA, antibody identification and flow crossmatches. Performs quality control and equipment maintenance associated with test procedures and clerical tasks that employ the LIS to accurately order, report, and charge for test results. Duties & Responsibilities Perform HLA typing, antibody screening and identification, and flow cross matches using established laboratory techniques. Interpret different and complex reaction patterns. Identify probable causes for any irregular or atypical test results. Perform quality control monitoring and record keeping, daily equipment function checks and scheduled preventative maintenance procedures. Prepare reagents required to perform analyses. Monitor reagent supply levels to ensure adequate levels are maintained. Assure compliance with accreditation standards. Attend continuing education sessions and review literature to remain proficient in the latest procedures and testing techniques. Instruct students and/or new employees in test procedures and policies. Assist with research and development of new procedures to update testing procedures. Rotate being on call for refrigerator/freezer alarms and emergency specimen send out Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent. Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1489. It is recommended that, in order to ensure consistent application of these qualifications, the evaluation and verification of an applicant's credentials be accomplished through the cooperative efforts of an experienced clinical laboratory technologist and the personnel department in a manner which will preserve the applicant's anonymity. Bachelor's degree in Science that meets CLIA requirements to perform high complexity testing. Preferred Qualifications Have a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in one of the biological, chemical and/or medical sciences such as biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field. Have at least one-year full-time experience preferably working in an approved histocompatibility laboratory. knowledge of JCAHO and CAP requirements/standards as they apply to the testing performed in the Tissue Typing Laboratory. Possess the knowledge and skills needed to perform and interpret Tissue Typing tests. Have knowledge of correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimens from patients/donors so as not to contaminate self, coworker, or area. Have the ability to operate and perform troubleshooting of equipment and instruments in the Tissue Typing Laboratory. Have knowledge of the importance of maintaining proper, accurate and confidential records of patient and donor information both in the LIS and on hard copy. Able to identify problems of a technical/clerical nature and refer the problem to the supervisor. Exhibit a professional attitude when working with the public as well as medical personnel at all levels. Possess good communication skills.
