Full-time, Contract Duration:
3+ Months Position Summary The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) / Medical Technologist (MT) provides onsite clinical laboratory testing services in support of the VA Maine Healthcare System. This position performs a full range of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of eligible VA beneficiaries. The role supports day-to-day laboratory operations, including specimen processing, quality control, instrument operation, test performance, result verification, and documentation in accordance with VA policies, laboratory protocols, accreditation standards, and applicable federal requirements. Key Duties & Responsibilities Clinical Laboratory Testing Perform clinical laboratory testing in one or more disciplines, including: Chemistry Hematology Coagulation Urinalysis Microbiology Serology/Immunology Blood Bank/Transfusion Support Other assigned laboratory areas Receive, accession, process, and prepare patient specimens for analysis. Review and verify laboratory test results for accuracy, consistency, and clinical reasonableness. Identify abnormal, critical, or questionable results and follow established notification and escalation procedures. Laboratory Equipment & Quality Assurance Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and analyzers. Perform quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and proficiency testing activities. Prepare reagents, stains, controls, standards, and testing materials as required. Assist with validation of new or revised testing methods, procedures, equipment, and workflows. Documentation & Compliance Maintain laboratory records, worksheets, instrument logs, QC documentation, and required records. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), laboratory protocols, and specimen-handling requirements.
Ensure compliance with:
HIPAA regulations VA policies CAP standards CLIA requirements Joint Commission standards Other applicable accreditation and regulatory requirements Collaboration & Support Coordinate with VA laboratory staff, clinicians, nurses, and healthcare personnel regarding specimen, testing, or result-related issues. Support laboratory workflow by prioritizing stat, routine, and scheduled testing. Report equipment failures, supply shortages, safety concerns, and testing delays to appropriate personnel. Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment. Perform additional clinical laboratory duties within the scope of training, certification, and contract requirements. Minimum QualificationsEducation Candidates must meet one of the following educational pathways: Option 1 Bachelor's or graduate-level degree from a regionally accredited college/university with coursework in: Biological Sciences Chemistry Mathematics Successful completion of a CLS/MT program accredited by: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), or Another accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Option 2 Completion of a full 4-year course of study that included: 12 months in a college
  • or hospital-based Medical Technology Program approved by a recognized accrediting organization.
Option 3 Bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited institution including: 16 semester hours of Biological Science (including Microbiology) 16 semester hours of Chemistry (including Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry) One semester of Mathematics Plus five (5) years of acceptable full-time clinical laboratory experience in: Blood Banking Chemistry Hematology Microbiology Immunology Urinalysis/Body Fluids Required Certifications National Certification as: Medical Technologist (MT) Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Certification must remain current throughout contract performance. BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification Required ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Certification Required Continuing education requirements must be maintained to preserve certification status. Technical Requirements Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently. Demonstrated competency in laboratory testing procedures and patient-care support services. Ability to provide documentation of current certification, licensure, skills, and competencies upon request.

VA Healthcare Facilities Department of Defense (DoD) Facilities Federal Healthcare Systems Hospital Laboratories High-Volume Clinical Laboratories Experience with automated analyzers in: Chemistry Hematology Coagulation Urinalysis Microbiology Blood Bank Familiarity with: Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Experience working under: CAP Accreditation CLIA Standards Joint Commission Standards Ability to support multiple shifts, weekends, holidays, and surge coverage. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong understanding of: Clinical laboratory principles Specimen integrity Analytical testing methodologies Result interpretation Ability to identify: Testing errors Instrument malfunctions Specimen issues Critical laboratory values Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills. Strong organizational and time-management abilities. Ability to manage multiple testing priorities in a fast-paced patient-care environment. Effective communication and collaboration skills. Sound professional judgment regarding patient safety, testing accuracy, and laboratory operations. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Work performed onsite in a clinical laboratory environment.
