Location:
Boone, North Carolina | Full-Time | Non-Exempt Why You'll Love Working Here As a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist at UNC Health Appalachian, you will play a vital role in supporting patient diagnosis and treatment through accurate laboratory testing. Working within a collaborative clinical laboratory environment, you will perform a variety of diagnostic tests that directly impact patient care and clinical decision-making.

Boone, NC offers exceptional outdoor recreation, vibrant culture, and a welcoming mountain community What You'll Do as a Medical Laboratory Professional Perform chemical, hematologic, microscopic, and serological tests on patient specimens Collect, label, and prepare patient specimens including blood, urine, and sputum using established laboratory protocols Perform phlebotomy and assist with specimen collection when needed Analyze and interpret laboratory test results using both manual and automated laboratory instruments Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment while troubleshooting technical issues Ensure compliance with laboratory Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) procedures Accurately document laboratory findings and report results to physicians and clinical staff Follow all safety, infection control, and regulatory standards Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams to support patient diagnosis and treatment Maintain laboratory records and assist with specimen storage and inventory management Qualifications Minimum Education Candidates may qualify under one of the following pathways: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science field Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS): Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related biological science field with required clinical training Experience Clinical laboratory training through an accredited MLT or MT/MLS program required Previous clinical laboratory experience preferred Required Registration / License / Certification MLT, MT, or MLS certification through an accredited testing agency (such as ASCP) preferred Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and specimen processing Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and healthcare staff Competency in laboratory instrumentation, testing methods, and safety procedures Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance and quality control practices Ability to utilize laboratory computer systems and electronic documentation Physical & Work Environment Continuous standing and walking for extended periods (≥ 8 hours per shift) Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to and greater than 50 pounds Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and reaching Continuous manual dexterity and close eye work Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens Frequent exposure to laboratory chemicals, reagents, and biological specimens Potential exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation Subject to irregular hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays What Sets Us Apart
