The sleep technologist operates under the general supervision of the medical director or designated authority, providing comprehensive assessment and treatment for sleep disorders. This includes in-center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, patient care, and education. A credentialed sleep technologist in sleep technology, they oversee other sleep center staff, while technicians and trainees are supervised directly by the credentialed technologist or the medical director. Work Shift Job Description Primary Responsibilities:
Proficiently score patient studies and serve as an educational resource for other staff members. Stay abreast of Polysomnographic trends and advancements, actively participating in professional associations. Contribute to departmental and hospital objectives through proactive communication and collaboration. Demonstrate effective behaviors consistent with organization-wide core competencies. Possess the knowledge and skills to provide age-specific care for patients ranging from neonatal to geriatric. Address developmental needs of patients and families during testing procedures. Safely conduct diagnostic sleep tests such as
PSG, PAP
Titration, and related procedures. Provide patient education and instructions suitable for home sleep apnea testing. Analyze and document relevant data, maintaining accurate patient records and communicating findings to physicians. Clean and set up sleep lab equipment according to protocol, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Identify and resolve issues related to patient conditions and testing procedures, suggesting modifications as necessary and consulting with physicians. Collaborate effectively with the healthcare team, aiding in inventory management, and adhering to budgetary constraints. Recognize artifact, inadequate signals, and equipment failures. Proficiently score sleep/wake stages, clinical events, and leg movements, generating precise reports. Participate in the quality assurance program and adhere to MUSC's compliance requirements and goals. Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in managing emergencies, varying workloads, personnel shortages, and unforeseen events. Attend educational sessions, interdisciplinary meetings, and ensure accurate billing for sleep lab services. Fulfill any other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum 5 years of patient care experience. Current Basic Life Support certification. Board Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or holds a credential in a related field i.e., Respiratory, EEG, Nursing. Sleep credential required with 24 months. Strong analytical skills for resolving complex clinical problems and ensuring patient safety. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and communicate well within a multidisciplinary team. Flexibility to work varying hours to meet patient and department needs. Physical capability to monitor patients for extended periods, assemble equipment, and lift and move patients as required.
Working Environment:
The role entails providing services in an environment where potential exposure or injury risks from various sources, including communicable diseases and hazardous materials, are present.
Additional Job Description Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 4 years of experience working with sleep patients. State Licensure and/or professional certification requirements may be required depending on the position. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
