Job Description

Orthopedic Clinical Nurse Specialist Position Overview:
The Orthopedic Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who functions in the sub-roles of clinical practice, leader, educator, researcher, and consultant with the goal of improving patient outcomes in three spheres: patient, practice, and organization. The ortho CNS provides expert collaboration and leadership in the delivery of orthopedic care and supports high-quality, evidence-based clinical practice, professional development, and improvement initiatives within the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert clinical consultation in the care of orthopedic patients, including trauma, joint replacement, spine, and sports injuries
  • Design, implement, and evaluate care protocols to ensure high standards of patient care and alignment with evidence-based practices
  • Educate and mentor nursing staff and other healthcare providers in orthopedic clinical care and professional development
  • Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, physical therapists, and case managers to support interdisciplinary care coordination
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives related to orthopedic care and in alignment with organizational priorities
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends, outcomes, and areas for improvement in orthopedic services
  • Participate in policy development, research activities, and accreditation readiness efforts as related to orthopedic care
Minimum Qualifications Education:
  • Master's or Doctorate degree in Nursing with Clinical Nurse Specialist preparation from an accredited school of nursing
Licensure/Certification:
  • Current RN and CNS licensure in TN
  • CNS board certification (ANCC or equivalent)
  • BLS required
  • ONC certification preferred
Experience:
  • At least 3 years of clinical nursing experience (ortho nursing experience preferred)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of orthopedic clinical care and patient safety standards
  • Demonstrate leadership in nursing practice improvement and staff development
  • Ability to collect and analyze clinical data to inform practice decisions
  • Skilled in interprofessional communication, systems thinking, and adult education
