Job description: About SANE Safer Alternatives through Networking and Education (SANE) is a nonprofit harm reduction agency located in Sacramento, CA. Our services include a needs-based Syringe Exchange Program, distribution of safer sex supplies, HIV & HCV testing and referral, overdose prevention education, outreach to people experiencing homelessness and a low barrier Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. SANE employs, in all its efforts, the principles of humanism, harm reduction, and respect for human rights and dignity.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position is entry level and temporary, 3-4 months, (longer employment would be dependent on grant funding and employee performance). The hours of the drop-in center are Tuesday-Saturday, 2:30pm-6:30pm. The community health worker works with the SANE team to provide harm reduction services to program participants. The community health worker provides supplies and education to participants from various backgrounds, focusing specifically on people who use drugs, people living with HIV, people who experience homelessness, people who engage in sex work, people with disabilities, justice system-invovled individuals, and people who identify as LGBTQ+. The community health worker connects with participants who are interested in harm reduction services, medication assisted treatment (MAT), HIV testing, or other services. Participant interactions occur inside of the SANE drop in center. SUMMARY OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Follows principles of harm reduction when communicating and providing services to participants, which includes demonstrating empathy, support, and being judgement-free. Works with participants 1-on-1 in the SANE drop in center to provide harm reduction supplies Prepares supplies for home delivery Assists with naloxone and overdose prevention training Packs safer use kits, safer sex kits, and other harm reduction kits Works with other SANE staff to unload and organize supply shipments Collects and records data from participant encounters consistent with program activities Any other duties as assigned Qualifications:
Required:
Candidates for this position are required to work in person at SANE's office located in Sacramento. Comfortable assisting the SANE team with providing sterile syringes and offering safe disposal of used syringes Has strong interpersonal skills working with culturally and socially diverse community groups and other underserved communities Able to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment within an office setting Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be comfortable using a computer, an electronic tablet and basic office software Must be comfortable working with persons experiencing homelessness, and people who use drugs Ability to create and maintain an environment where client feels heard & respected Ability to work as part of a team using critical thinking and problem solving Organizational skills to establish priorities and to maintain work effectiveness The desired candidate will meet at least two of the following qualifications: Documented work experience in the field of harm reduction and/or chemical dependency, or working with people experiencing homelessness Ideal candidates will be knowledgeable with the principles of harm reduction, person-first language, have strong communication skills, and be passionate for empowering underserved communities Lived experience with substance use disorders, incarceration, homelessness, and/or sex work.
