Violence Interrupter

LIFE Camp, Inc. seeks committed and experienced individuals to manage the front lines of our efforts to reduce violence in South Jamaica, Queens. Violence Interrupters work individually and as a team to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings. They provide mediation services and serve as conduits to the program's Outreach Workers. Applicants should know the Southeast Queens area or New York City inner-city communities. Key Responsibilities Work to intervene in circumstances where gun violence is likely, including possible retaliation. Identify youth who are at high risk for involvement in violent activities and assist them. Learn about the causes of shootings and killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups, including working with the community and outreach programs to gather information that may help prevent additional violence. Form relationships with individuals at the highest risk in the community, as well as the people connected to them. Conduct outreach within the community, individually and as part of a team, to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups. Speak with residents, build connections, and develop relationships throughout the community. Learn about potential conflicts and assist in preventing them. Participate in organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings or killings occur. Work with community partners to identify and diffuse "hot spots" for shootings and violence. Report to the Outreach Worker Supervisor and keep them informed of all relevant community activities. Document all contacts with high-risk individuals. Document shootings and other acts of violence that are prevented. Respond to shootings in other communities when necessary. Distribute public education materials to targeted audiences. Share information about community events and important resources. Attend all required program trainings. Attend and assist in facilitating community events and shooting responses. Attend weekly staff meetings and other team meetings as required. Requirements In-depth knowledge of the community, particularly the target area. Experience working with high-risk youth and gang-involved individuals. Residency within the target area preferred. Knowledge of street sets, crews, gangs, and/or groups. Ability to walk 30 blocks or more regularly. Ability to pass a drug screening. Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays. Commitment to working toward positive community change. No pending criminal cases or prior convictions related to sexual assault, child abuse, or domestic violence. Excellent communication skills. Experience and/or training in crisis intervention.

Pay:

$21.00 - $22.00 per hour People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply
