The Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is a beacon of innovation and knowledge creation in higher education, a two-year college where evidence-based high-impact practices in curriculum design and delivery permeate the educational model and have yielded graduation rates that are the highest in CUNY's community college sector and above the national average. Located in midtown Manhattan, Guttman draws a culturally diverse student body from across New York City and is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution. POSITION SUMMARY
The Part-Time Instructor for the Community Navigator Course will plan, deliver, and evaluate instruction for an entry-level behavioral health workforce training program that prepares students to connect individuals with essential community resources, services, and supports. The Instructor brings expertise in systems navigation, community outreach, and social determinants of health to equip students with the skills needed to serve as effective Community Navigators in health, behavioral health, and social services settings. This position reports to the Workforce Development and Continuing Education Department and works collaboratively with program staff to ensure high-quality instructional outcomes and student success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction & Curriculum Delivery Deliver competency-based instruction for the Community Navigator course, covering topics such as resource mapping, benefits navigation, outreach strategies, cultural humility, social determinants of health, and documentation. Develop and update lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with community health worker (CHW) competency frameworks and local workforce needs. Facilitate dynamic, community-centered learning experiences including guest speakers, field-based activities, and resource navigation simulations. Incorporate culturally responsive and linguistically accessible instructional strategies to reflect the communities students will serve. Student Support & Assessment Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback on assignments, skills demonstrations, and participation. Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance in Xendirect and in coordination with program staff. Identify students in need of additional support and connect them with program resources or academic advising. Program Collaboration Participate in program orientations, faculty meetings, and professional development sessions as needed Assist with program reporting by providing instructional data and student outcome information as requested. Perform related instructional duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Social Work, Community Health, Human Services, or a related field — OR equivalent professional experience in community navigation or outreach. Minimum 3 years of experience in community health, case management, benefits counseling, or systems navigation, preferably in a behavioral health or social services context. Strong working knowledge of community resources, social services systems, and referral processes in New York City or surrounding areas. Excellent communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills. Ability to teach and connect with diverse adult learners, particularly those from underserved communities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Public Health, Social Work, or a closely related field. Prior instructional, training, or workforce development experience in an adult education or community college setting. Community Health Worker (CHW) certification or eligibility; familiarity with NYS CHW scope of practice. Experience with motivational interviewing, harm reduction approaches, or trauma-informed outreach practices.
COMPENSATION & TERMS
Part-time, per-session instructional position. Compensation commensurate with qualifications and program pay scale. Grant-funded; continuation contingent upon funding availability and program enrollment. Schedule varies based on course offerings; evening and/or weekend availability may be required.
