Laboratory Screening Technician Job Description This role offers the opportunity to work as a Laboratory Screening Technician in a SAMHSA-certified toxicology laboratory, performing initial analysis of urine and oral fluid specimens for substances of abuse. You will operate and maintain analytical instruments, follow strict regulatory guidelines, and help ensure the accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality of all test results. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Responsibilities Operate and maintain screening instruments used for the initial analysis of urine and oral fluid specimens for substances of abuse. Perform initial review and interpretation of test results for donor specimens and quality control samples. Conduct testing using refractometers and pH meters in accordance with established laboratory procedures. Apply knowledge of screening and specimen validity test methods, including EIA, CEDIA, ELISA, refractometers, and pH meters. Troubleshoot issues with screening instruments and take appropriate corrective actions. Follow all security procedures to ensure the confidentiality and protection of donor information. Adhere to all established guidelines and policies outlined in the employee handbook and relevant laboratory procedures. Read and comprehend standard operating procedures (SOPs), Federal 49 CFR Part 40, and CAP-FDT guidelines to ensure regulatory compliance. Develop and communicate laboratory procedures and reports using appropriate math and reasoning skills. Collaborate and communicate effectively with other employees and supervisors, providing input and recommendations on laboratory operations. Work safely in an environment with potential exposure to toxic or hazardous materials, following all safety protocols. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biology. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory screening instruments for toxicology testing. Hands-on experience or training with refractometers and pH meters. Knowledge of screening and specimen validity test methods such as EIA, CEDIA, and ELISA. Ability to read and comprehend standard operating procedures, Federal 49 CFR Part 40, and CAP-FDT guidelines. Strong math and reasoning skills to develop and communicate laboratory procedures and reports. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds and perform full body movements required in a laboratory setting. Vision and hearing corrected to meet minimum acceptable norms for safe and accurate laboratory work. Ability to cope with stress related to production obligations and time-sensitive testing requirements. Effective communication skills to interact with colleagues and supervisors and to provide operational input. Additional Skills & Qualifications Advanced ability to understand analytical techniques and laboratory procedures. Advanced ability to understand and work with laboratory instrumentation. Advanced understanding of certification requirements for SAMHSA, CAP-FDT, and other relevant regulatory bodies. Advanced ability to understand the function and use of a Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other laboratory computer systems. Experience working in a regulated toxicology or clinical laboratory environment is beneficial. Familiarity with specimen validity testing and regulatory compliance in substance abuse testing is an advantage. Work Environment This position is based in a SAMHSA-certified toxicology laboratory operating Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. You will work with specialized laboratory instruments and equipment, including screening analyzers, refractometers, pH meters, and computer-based Laboratory Information Systems. The role involves standing, moving, and handling specimens, as well as lifting up to 25 pounds as needed. The environment may include potential exposure to toxic or hazardous materials, and you will follow strict safety, security, and confidentiality protocols at all times. The laboratory culture emphasizes accuracy, regulatory compliance, teamwork, and clear communication to meet production and quality obligations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Gretna, LA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
