Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Performs ancillary and non-complex technical laboratory duties (as regulations allow) to assist Histology Technical personnel in enhancing the productivity of the laboratory. Performs duties that aide in preparation of pre-analytic tasks, analytic testing, and post-analytic functions. Additional duties consists in assisting in the operation and maintenance of primary testing and ancillary laboratory equipment. Promotes the laboratory and its services within the mission of quality laboratory services that assure value to patients, employer clients and the company.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.0
Understands and performs all related policies and procedures as outlined in standard operating policy and procedure manuals. Reads all related policies and procedures annually including all new or revised policies and procedures (providing written documentation of review).

0 Performs laboratory pre-analytic related technical tasks and is responsible for ensuring quality results by: 2.1 Receiving, accepting and recognizing specimens that arrive from endoscopy center for preparation to include proper identification of specimen and transport conditions, Laboratory's Specimen Rejection Criteria. Affixes pre-labeled Specimen Accession numbers unto requis1tions and specimen containers ensuring that correct label matches each 2.2 Verifying and entry (Accessioning) of correct and appropriate data into laboratory LIS to include patient and specimen demographics. 3.0 Assists Histology Technical personnel in the operation all related instrumentation and equipment according to procedures including applicable documentation of scheduled maintenance in appropriate records/logs. 4.0 Performs non-complex grossing of biopsy specimens to include quantification and description of tissue and placement into tissue cassette for further processing by technical staff. 5.0 Performs transcription of macroscopic (gross dissection) examination, associated clinical summaries and microscopic description and interpretation under the guidance of the attending pathologist and/or Laboratory Director/General Supervisor. 6.0 Follows proper chemical and biological hygiene practices and contributes to laboratory effort to provide a safe and compliant working environment. Performs chemical hazardous waste disposal according to current Laboratory operating policies and procedures in line with regulatory guidelines. Reads all safety related policies and procedures including all new or revised policies and procedures in the Safety Manual. 7.0 Knows and follows current Laboratory Standard Operating Policies and Procedures. Assists in preparation for inspections. Follows all established Quality Control and Quality Assurance policies which includes periodic review of QC and QA data and summaries maintaining a comprehensive Quality Control and Quality Assurance program for the service.
  • 8.0 Interfaces with other technical, administrative, and support staff to promote quality customer service for all aspects of laboratory testing and specimen collection activities to include coordination of logistics 9.0 Maintains confidentiality of all department records and/or patient/medical information unless otherwise designated.
  • 10.0 Presents professional appearance and manner to all patients and co-workers and maintains calm, pleasant attitude in dealing with patients and co-workers
  • 11.0 Assists in duties as deemed necessary by the Laboratory Director, Practice Administrator and/or Medical Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION
Minimum equivalence of Associate's degree in biological science.
Must:
(ii) Have education and training equivalent to that specified in paragraph 42 CFR 493.1489 (b)(2)(i) of this section that includes
  • (A) At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either
  • (1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include
  • (i) Six semester hours of chemistry; (ii) Six semester hours of biology; and (iii) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and (B) Have laboratory training that includes either of the following: (1) Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS.
(This training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in paragraph (b)(2)(ii)(A) of this section.) (2) At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE
Approximately up to 1 year of progressively more responsible job-related experience
ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE
Approximately one to three months to gain familiarity with the related business environment, service area routines and procedures, and the full range of job duties.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Job requires a relatively moderate level of problem solving or can detect problems and refer them accordingly for technical expertise and problem solving.
INTERNAL CONTACTS
Internal contacts necessary to effectively explain and interpret information for others inside the business environment.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
Work is occasionally performed according to existing procedures and instructions.
PATIENT CARE
Assists with patient care by performing duties that allow others to provide direct patient care (e.g. performing lab tests to assist attending clinicians or other healthcare providers).
