Job Description
With a range of services
- from emergency care to diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and surgery
- we serve people of all ages in Edgerton, Milton, Janesville, Whitewater and the surrounding communities.
Duties:
Responsible for the collection and processing of specimens to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease and accurate and timely reporting of test results. Performs waived, moderately complex, and/or high complexity testing using manual or automated methods. Maintains competency in all areas of the Laboratory, including Microbiology and Immunohematology, to ensure patient needs are met. Oversees a variety of technical activities and individual section responsibilities to ensure efficient operation of the department.Essential Functions:
Complies with department policies, procedures and programs, participates in short and long-term department planning, maintains section policies, procedures, activities and objectives in compliance with departmental requirements. Prepares and maintains pertinent records, reports, statistics, logs, files and other documents in written and computer formats as required. Coordinates section documentation in compliance with departmental and regulatory requirements. Utilizes department resources in an effective, efficient and cost-effective manner. Provides quality service for all aspects of test performance, including pre-analytic and post-analytic phases of testing; develops and successfully achieves quality improvement goals at least yearly. Participates in, and demonstrates satisfactory performance of HHS approved proficiency testing and departmental quality control activities. Supervises and coordinates section proficiency testing and quality control activities. Performs test procedures; performs daily, weekly and monthly instrument and equipment maintenance and takes appropriate action when necessary. Identifies technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications and ensures that patient test results are not reported or services rendered until all corrective actions are taken. Maintains competency in all areas of departmental operation; actively pursues professional growth. Participates in continuing education to develop and maintain skills that contribute to departmental achievement and hospital goals and mission. Assists in the development of training and education programs. Provides training for other employees and students. Must have skills and interest in working with patients from newborn to geriatric and of all backgrounds and dispositions. Appraises section performance and competency, addresses complaints, identifies and acts on opportunities for improvement and problem-solving.Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
Attends and participates in departmental and other meetings or projects required. Performs other duties as assigned by pathologist, or department director. Participates in coverage as needed for regular hours, vacations, holidays and on-call hours and adapts to changes. To ensure efficient operation of the department, may also be assigned to participate in or oversee a variety of technical activities and individual section responsibilities that fall within CLIA defined specifications based on education and experience. May be responsible for providing day-to-day oversight of high complexity test performance by other testing personnel. May need to be accessible to testing personnel when testing is performed to provide, telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the laboratory director or technical supervisor. Advanced Responsibility Requirements to perform asTechnical Supervisor:
Must have at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing for the applicable specialty. For Microbiology, must have at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing within the specialty of microbiology with a minimum of 6 months of experience in high complexity testing within any applicable subspecialty.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Must meet CLIA 88 Testing Personnel qualification requirements for a CLIA moderate and high complexity laboratory. Have earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; or Have at least 120 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either— Forty-eight (48) semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or Forty-eight (48) semester hours of science courses that include— Twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, which must include general chemistry and biochemistry or organic chemistry; Twelve (12) semester hours of biology, which must include general biology and molecular biology, cell biology or genetics; and Twenty-four (24) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science or technology in any combination.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
ASCP or AMT certification, or eligible for certification at time of hire and certified within 1 year of hire. Maintains current BLS training and certification.
