Job Description

Title of Position:
Dental Assistant Position Summary:
Dental assistants perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties, and often work chair-side as dentist examine and treat patients.
Responsibilities:
1. Assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures. 2. Taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays). 3. Asking about the patient's medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse. 4. Serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol, and preparing, as well as sterilizing instruments and equipment. 5. Helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment. 6. Providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling). 7. Teaching patient's appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling) 8. Taking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth) 9. Keep records of dental treatments 10. Performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer. 11. Communicating with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing, and ordering supplies)
Qualifications:
  • Proven experience as dental assistant (2 years preferred)
  • Knowledge of dental instruments and sterilization methods
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations
  • Ability to perform regulated non-surgical task like temporary crowns, polishing and others
  • Excellent communication and attention to detail
  • Additional certification or training is an asset (e.g. EFDA)
  • Good computer skills (Eaglesoft and MDVita software)
  • Current CPR (BLS) required
  • Completion of accredited course in dental assisting preferred (Qualified Dental Assistant)
  • High school graduate or GED
