Job Summary:
The DA assists in the performance of quality, caring, clinical dentistry by aiding the doctor smoothly and unobtrusively during examinations and treatment. The DA performs clinical and technical procedures under the super­vision of a licensed dentist as well as prepares the operatory and equipment, gets the patient ready, and maintains awareness of the comfort and safety needs of patients. Assists Dentist during examination and treatment of patients, administers company policies and regulatory compliance and maintains dental supplies are stocked for procedures. It is essential to be flexible, friendly and work in a team environment. In addition, the Dental Assistant must display excellent communication skills and a commitment to patient care.
Essential Duties:
Records treatment information on the patient's chart, including treatment rendered, the type of treatment planned and the amount of chair time, doctor time and assistant time needed for next appointment. Assists the doctor by passing instruments, aspirating intraoral fluids, mixing materials and medicaments during examinations or treatment. Provides customer service support to patients by escorting them to and from the treatment room and prepping them for care by the doctor. Prepares all treatment rooms including, but not limited to, set-up, decontamination, sterilization of all instruments, cleaning and restocking. Maintains cleanliness of the lab and sterilizing area. Maintains all chemical solutions, i.e., disinfectant soaks and sprays, sterilents, ultrasonic, and presoak. Reviews patient's medical history, progress from the previous visit, if applicable, and the scheduled treatment plan with each patient. Take preliminary and final impressions and bite registrations for diagnostic and opposing models, cast restorations, space maintainers, and occlusal guards, to include computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacture applications. Ensures lights, units, nitrous equipment and automatic processors are turned on prior to the first patient. Applies nonaerosol and noncaustic topical agents, fluoride, and pit and fissure sealants. Inspects patient's oral cavity and charts lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth. Places and removes temporary sedative dressings and postextraction and periodontal dressings. Helps administer nitrous oxide to patients as applicable. Cleans hand pieces and vacuum traps. Places and removes rubber dams. Places, wedges, and holds and removes anterior matrices. Obtains endodontic cultures. Dries canals with absorbent points. Tests pulp vitality. Removes excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth. Sizes stainless steel crowns, temporary crowns, and bands. Performs coronal polishing. Prepares teeth for bonding by etching. Pours and trims study models. Monitors incoming and outgoing lab cases. Orders supplies. Maintains plaster trap and lab counter areas. Performs coronal polishing. Gives fluoride treatments. Applies sealants. Places, exposes, and processes radiographs. Gives patient oral health instructions. Performs oral inspection, with no diagnosis. Takes and records blood pressure and vital signs. Takes intra-oral and extra-oral photographs. Gives preoperative and postoperative instructions. Aids doctor in administration of an oral sedative drug to patient. Assists in the administration of inhalation minimal sedation (nitrous oxide) analgesia, including starting and stopping the flow as directed by the supervising dentist. Places topical anesthetics under supervision of provider Places a matrix and wedge for a direct restorative material after the dentist has prepared the cavity.. Performs acid etch and applies bonding agents. Holds in place and removes impression materials after the dentist has placed them. Takes impressions, bite registrations, or digital scans of the teeth and jaws for: diagnostic and opposing models; fixed and removable orthodontic appliances, occlusal guards, bleaching trays, and fluoride trays; and temporary indirect restorations such as temporary crowns. Fabricates and delivers bleaching and fluoride trays. Removes the excess cement after the dentist has placed a crown or appliance, or around orthodontic bands. Assists in placement of temporary filling (as zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE)) after diagnosis and examination by the dentist. Packs and medicates extraction areas. Removes fixed orthodontic appliances, orthodontic cement, and orthodontic bonded resin material. Performs duties off-site at surgical center, as required for cases performed under general anesthesia Perform monitoring functions and assistance for procedures of patients under oral conscious sedation Knowledge / Skills /
Abilities:
Skilled in the use of standard dental office equipment including: Autoclave, model trimmer, X-ray machine - Pano, Panoramic X-ray, ultrasonic, Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide, Laser, Intra Oral camera, Vacu-press, and hand pieces. Ability to take blood pressure, attach EKG leads, and read monitors. Knowledge of cross contamination and how to prevent it. Knowledge of OSHA regulations and changes. Ability to take radiographs, including FMX, Pano and anterior PA's. Knowledge of English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Skilled in the use of standard office equipment including: telephones, calculators, copiers, fax, computers, and computer software (MS Excel, Word, Practice Management software). Ability to engender trust from the doctors, co-workers, and patients. Ability to work cooperatively with management, staff, and patients. Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete tasks in a timely and independent manner. Ability to accept constructive feedback. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and maintain confidentiality. Ability to communicate and express thoughts and ideas competently. Specified training courses as mandated by State for certification, licensure or registration requirements. Ensure quality patient service by providing thorough patient care, effective communication, and personal attention in a gentle, caring manner. Prepare the treatment rooms, patient records, equipment and necessary instruments for dental procedures in accordance with universal safety precautions and other safety standards. Provide chair-side assistance to the Dentist including but not limited to basic and complex restorative, surgical, endodontic, pediatric, emergency and preventive dental treatment procedures. Take dental impressions. Record accurate and concise patient/treatment information and clinical notes into dental programs as instructed by Dentist. Explain to each patient the purpose and process involved in their dental care and reinforce the treatment plan prescribed by the Dentist Explain consents in detail, answer patient questions and obtain patient signatures. Expose quality radiographs; date and label properly. Perform various laboratory procedures (pouring study models, fabricating bleaching trays, etc.) Maintain sterilization area as clean and organized Support business goals by utilizing schedules effectively and supporting the practice revenue objectives. Effectively communicate and develop a strong working relationship with the Dentist and promote teamwork through cooperative and professional behaviors. Follow OSHA and CDC Guidelines for a clean workplace. Maintain dental equipment in proper working order. Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results. Ensure operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques. Responsible for stocking treatment areas. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Conduct work in compliance with Federal, State, and other regulations, (i.e. OSHA, HIPAA, ADA, etc.) and clinic policies and practices. Other duties may be assigned.

May be required to lift up to 25lbs. or to roll a 90-pound machine on wheels from one area to another. Hand-eye coordination and hand, arm, and finger mobility for detailed work with objects. May be required to physically assist/lift drowsy patients after anesthesia.

Vision:
close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Hearing:

Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or operate equipment. May be required to administer CPR. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation. Exposure to moderate noise levels. Exposure to hectic, fast-paced, high anxiety environments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
