JOB PURPOSE
The Clinical Hemodialysis Technician provides safe, high ‑ quality dialysis treatment and direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and clinical leadership. This role supports all aspects of hemodialysis treatment, equipment operation, water treatment systems, infection control, and patient monitoring. The technician contributes to positive clinical outcomes by ensuring accurate documentation, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting patient education while upholding all regulatory, organizational, and professional standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Clinical Care and Treatment Support Perform all technical skills required of a Hemodialysis Technician in accordance with competency assessments and state licensure. Deliver age ‑ appropriate care and carry out all aspects of the hemodialysis procedure as prescribed. Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments following established protocols. Observe, recognize, and report dialysis ‑ related and non ‑ dialysis ‑ related patient issues to the RN and clinical leadership. Prioritize patient care needs, respond to emergency and non ‑ emergency situations, and document all relevant information. Provide reinforcement of patient and family education under RN direction. Maintain a safe environment by following infection control standards, OSHA regulations, and proper body mechanics. Perform hemodialysis access care and document administration of saline and heparin under RN direction and within state practice guidelines. Obtain blood samples and other specimens as ordered. Dialyze isolation patients using appropriate isolation precautions and procedures. 2. Equipment Operation and Technical Responsibilities Maintain competency in the operation, sanitization, maintenance, and troubleshooting of dialysis machines, water treatment systems, and related equipment. Participate in routine cleaning, care, and monitoring of equipment in collaboration with the supervisor and Biomedical Technician. Assist with ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and ensuring the unit remains neat, organized, and well ‑ stocked. Transport supplies, blood samples, records, and reports as directed. 3. Documentation and Communication Document all patient care activities clearly, accurately, and completely in manual or electronic health records. Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, supervisors, patients, and families. Report equipment issues, supply concerns, unusual incidents, and patient condition changes promptly and according to policy. Maintain positive working relationships with the Medical Director and medical staff. 4. Administrative and Team Support Assist in the orientation and training of new and existing staff under RN supervision. Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and unit ‑ based projects. Attend staff meetings, in ‑ service training, and required educational sessions. Support scheduling needs and staffing rotation to ensure adequate unit coverage. Assist the Director of Nursing and RN staff with administrative tasks as assigned. 5. Professional Development Adhere to all organizational policies, including those outlined in the Employee Handbook. Complete required clinical and corporate training programs related to ESRD care, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, leadership development, and communication. Participate in ongoing education to stay current with dialysis techniques and best practices. Seek guidance when needed and serve as a resource to other staff within scope of practice.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED
High school diploma or equivalent required
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1-2 years of experience in a clinical setting
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW
