ABOUT THIS POSITION
The City of Phoenix Human Services Department (HSD) enhances the health, wellness, and quality of life for Phoenix residents by providing a comprehensive array of services to help people meet emergency, short, and long-term needs; and to help every individual reach their highest level of self-sufficiency. HSD offers a wide variety of programs for children, adults, and families at numerous locations throughout the city. The Head Start Birth to Five Dietitian is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring nutrition services that meet or exceed all federal Head Start Program Performance Standards. This role ensures children receive high-quality, developmentally appropriate nutrition support that promotes healthy growth, addresses individual dietary needs, and supports family well-being. The Dietitian works collaboratively with families, teachers, health staff, and community partners to create a nutrition environment that supports school readiness and lifelong wellness. Essential Duties of this role include: Conduct nutrition assessment and individualization for enrolled children reviewing health histories, and dietary needs. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to nutrition, food safety and Head Start Performance Standards. Participate in program audits, monitoring visits and quality assurance reviews. Reviews menus to adjust for children with special diets, allergies or medical conditions with physician documentation. Reviews and updates annual nutritional plans. Establish and maintain standards of sanitation during meal preparation and service. Provides education on food allergies, safe feeding practices and other nutrition related concerns to Head Start program participants and staff. Aids in development of all necessary nutrition forms to record data as needed. Prepares and submits statistical and narrative reports. Provide nutrition education to families and staff through workshops, newsletters, home visits or 1 on 1 consultations. Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity. Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings for case staffing.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Knowledge of:
Menu planning for children ages birth to five years, including quality, quantity, and variety of foods. Nutrition assessment and follow-up education for families with children birth to five years. Counseling and education programs aimed at nutrition care. Special dietary needs of children birth to five years. Cultural relevant dietary information. USDA child and Food Programs. National School Lunch Programs. Head Start Program Performance Standards.
Ability to:
Develop and implement a nutrition education program for children ages birth to five. Apply specialized knowledge and techniques to nutrition education and consultation. Establish and maintain effective working relationships, communications, and work productively with contracted vendors and community health programs. Prepare and present necessary statistical and other data reports, oral or written as required. Communicate effectively with vendors, staff and families. Produce written documents with clearly organized thought in the English. language using proper sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Work cooperatively with City employees, clients, agencies, and the public. Analyze nutrition related data to improve program outcomes. Monitor processes and data to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
SALARY Pay and Hiring Range:
$63,044.80 - 84,468.80 annually.

Internal Only:
Please understand that this is pay grade 049. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance. Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in nutrition, Completion of a clinical internship approved by American Dietetic Association, Two years of professional experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Candidate must be Registered Dietitian Nutritionist RDN. Experience providing developmentally appropriate nutrition services and individualized meal plans to the Birth to Five age group. Experience working with Head Start Program Performance Standards. Experience conducting nutrition assessments and reviewing growth charts. Experience working with feeding practices for infants, toddlers and preschoolers including CACFP meal patterns. Two or more years of experience working in early childhood or community nutrition program. Two or more years of experience creating individualized meal plans for children having special dietary needs.
