Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Wellness Center Nutritionist will assist Tribal members, families and the Viejas community with nutritional health education, evaluations, meal plan development, and ongoing support to promote healthy lifestyles across all ages. In collaboration with the staff members of the Yaytaanak Wellness Center (YWC) and the Viejas Community Services Department, the Nutritionist provides confidential, culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and patient-centered support to Tribal members, families, and the Viejas community.
CORE SCOPE OF POSITION
Works with Tribal members, families and Viejas community members to develop evidence-based nutrition plans tailored to medical needs, cultural preferences and health goals.
Collaborates with primary care teams to establish, implement, and refine nutrition-related best practices that support patient-centered, evidence-based care.
Coordinates and leads nutrition-related health classes for the community, including family-friendly workshops.
Provides guidance on healthy meal preparation for households including shopping strategies.
Works directly with families and youth athletes to develop age-appropriate, sport-specific nutrition strategies that support training, recovery, and long-term health.
Continues to strengthen the YWC's partnerships and referral pathways with nutritionists and dieticians at local healthcare organizations.
Stays up to date on nutrition and health research relevant to children, adults, and elders.
Collaborates with the YWC media team in designing health messaging surrounding nutrition, diabetes, meal prep, etc.
Works in coordination with the YWC staff and leadership to meet program goals, grant requirements and guidelines.
Ensures that a clean, safe, hazard-free work environment is maintained.
Adheres to all company and department policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
INTERACTION
Interacts with Viejas Team Members, Tribal Members, community members, and Tribal Government staff
SUPERVISION
Does not provide supervision to other team members
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
Bachelor's degree in dietetics, nutrition, or related area required
EXPERIENCE
Two years' experience in the nutrition field
Experience working with patients with diabetes and other chronic diseases preferred
Experience working in a HIPAA-compliant workplace required
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Ability to apply academic nutrition concepts to cultural and traditional foods in a sensitive way.
Demonstrative knowledge of health, nutrition, and the effects of various diets on the body.
Ability to interpret and communicate academic information to a community in an accessible way.
Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proven time management and ability to meet deadlines.
Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
Must be dependable, can work cooperatively with others, and must value teamwork.
Ability to work independently and maintain a high degree of confidentiality .
Ability to work in a professional high-pressure environment while demonstrating and maintaining good personal relation/people skills and a positive attitude.
Ability to multitask and work well under stress.
Must be a self-starter and able to adjust to change.
Must be able to work flexible hours during the day or evening, including weekends.
