Completes nutrition-focused physical assessments, takes measurements, reviews medical records, collects data via interviews, and evaluates anthropometric status. Evaluates assessment data to identify nutrition risks, nutrition problems, criteria consistent with malnutrition, knowledge deficits, and high-risk health behaviors. Offers nutrition interventions, orders, education, counseling, and referrals to other services. May place feeding tubes or perform indirect calorimetry studies. Provides counseling and education using evidence-based techniques that reflect appropriate health literacy and cultural sensitivity to patients with disease processes requiring nutritional management. Monitors and evaluates nutrition care plans to reach nutrition goals and promote optimal outcomes. Supervises practice experience for dietetic interns, dietetic technicians, registration eligible dietitians and new employees, participates in research, performance improvement, and initiatives. Enters complete, accurate, and timely electronic health record documentation. Enters nutrition orders when authorized by Medical Staff policy and procedure to reflect patient care. Participates in patient care rounds, collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to create nutrition plans of care. Promotes evidence-based nutrition care and makes expertise available to foodservice areas. Provides timely responses to internal electronic communication. Other duties as assigned. K nowledge,Skills, and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy. [Required]
- General knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, basic computer skills, e-mail and spreadsheet software. [Required]
- Ability to search the web for nutrition research or practice updates and apply knowledge to updating reference materials, preparing for presentations, education, etc. [Required]
- Reviews and/or updates resource/reference materials when applicable or required. [Required]
- Identifies specific patient or staff needs, initiates and develops educational or clinical materials then evaluates outcomes. [Required]
- Assures that care delivered to each patient is in accordance with established standards. [Required]
- Skill and knowledge in working with an electronic health record system. [Required]
- Provides appropriate intervention in accordance with the identified patient's goals. [Required]
- Reassesses and updates nutrition care process and implement changes as indicated. [Required]
- Assessment, interventions and procedures utilizing equipment are appropriate for age group.
Education:
- Bachelor's [Required]
Field of Study:
- at a U.S. regionally accredited university or college and course work approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics
- Completes a CADE-accredited supervised practice program at a healthcare facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation, or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies
- Didactic program with strong focus in clinical nutrition
