Position Summary:
The Associate Nursing Director, Downtown Campus is responsible for developing and overseeing the clinical and business operations for all adult inpatient nursing services delivered at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown. This includes, and not limited to, the Intensive Care Unit, Telemetry Unit, 4Center Surgical Unit, 3West Medical Unit, 3Center Family Medicine Unit, House Operations Manager and Staffing Office. The Associate Nursing Director will work to foster a team approach to provide efficient quality care and support for all patients while embracing the organization's culture, mission, vision, and values.
Position Responsibilities:
Human Resources Management:
Work across multiple nursing functions and with medical and hospital leaders to create a consistent approach to HR management. Hold unit leaders within a department accountable for high performance and high engagement by articulating expectations, monitoring performance and providing feedback consistently across areas of responsibility. Work across multiple clinical functions and with multidisciplinary leaders to create a consistent approach to HR management. Approve resource allocations and staffing models. Develop an environment for the successful recruitment and retention of staff. Develop and retain qualified nursing leadership staff and build an effective leadership team. Encourage staff participation in shared governance.
Financial and Data Management and Analysis:
Develop strategy for budget priorities. Hold nurse managers and other leaders accountable for managing respective budgets. Work with own leaders within and external to area to innovatively address and resolve budget issues. Hold nurse managers and other leaders accountable for managing respective budgets. Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction:
Work across multiple nursing functions to develop, monitor and enhance quality and service indicators and business processes. Oversee patient satisfaction and quality indicators. Assure that clinical services, educational programs, and research activities are in compliance with all applicable internal and external regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission. Review and analyze data to enhance productivity and efficiency. Create an environment of shared decision-making. Promotes multidisciplinary collaboration on patient care and related issues. Collaborates with nursing and medical staff, various administrative staff and directors/managers in planning for and providing quality and consistent patient care services based on best practice. Work across multiple clinical functions to develop, monitor, and enhance quality and service metrics. Assure that clinical services, educational programs, and research activities are in compliance with all applicable internal and external requirements including the Joint Commission. Support and/or lead various performance improvement initiatives to ensure quality outcomes for patients.
Patient Care/Services Delivery:
Work across multiple nursing functions and with nurse managers and directors to implement best care practices and new models of care/service. Address implementation issues across nursing functions and with other departments. Incorporate the principles of Servant Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations. Work across multiple clinical functions and with medical directors to implement best care practices and new models of care/service. Address implementation issues across clinical functions and with other departments. Incorporate the principles of Service Excellence to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
Planning and Goal Management:
Develop departmental strategic plan and integrate it with other functions; guide leaders in developing action plans for implementation; monitor progress to goal completion. Assure integration of goals across functions. Demonstrates personal and professional growth and expertise by remaining current with state and federal associations and with professional trends, and by participating in community activities. Fosters the Magnet culture and supports Nursing Excellence programs and strategies and is actively involved in a professional organization. Shares best practices with nursing leadership. Ensures the departmental goals coincide with the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown Campus goals and system strategic plan, linking goals and objectives to outcomes. Communicates timely and effectively to ensures that nursing leadership team is well informed concerning hospital plans and issues. Reviews and analyzes statistical data to enhance productivity, efficiency and customer satisfaction. Uses results to expand services and improve operations.
Communication/Collaboration:
Serve as liaison between staff, medical staff, and nursing and healthcare leadership. Engage and collaborate with physicians to identify opportunities for improvement, program development and capital budgeting. Communicate with external agencies and constituencies to address issues and answer questions. Serve as liaison among multiple clinical functions, research, and education units to support collaboration in identifying opportunities for improvement and program development. Facilitate communication and cooperation across departments to ensure the standardization and coordination of care. Serve as liaison between staff, medical staff, and healthcare leadership. Engage and collaborate with physicians to identify opportunities for improvement, program development and capital budgeting. Develop effective working relationships among nursing to hospital/collegiate leadership, community, and agency partners.
Education Programs:
Administer nursing education programs. Develop effective orientation and staff development programs. Maintain a climate of learning that promotes collaborative experiences for students in the University Health Science Colleges and other health care programs. Participate in and present educational programs to staff and University colleges and programs. Develop and support efficient systems for patient education. Develop effective orientation and staff development programs appropriate to the adult inpatient setting. Maintain a climate of learning that promotes collaborative experiences for students in the College of Nursing and other health care programs. Develop and support efficient systems for patient education.
Research Administration :
Collaborate with other leaders to identify evidence-based practice and research opportunities. Assure access to nursing research and healthcare information. Benchmark best practices with comparable settings. Collaborate with Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice to identify evidence-based practice and research opportunities within Downtown Campus adult inpatient units. Assure access to nursing research and University of Iowa Health Care information. Benchmark best practices with comparable settings.

Education Requirements:
Master's degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's Degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire.
Experience Requirements:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in leadership role in a complex health care system with demonstrated ability to work with multiple disciplines to ensure effective health care operations with progressive leadership in acute care hospital operations. Demonstrated experience assuring patient safety, quality of care, and compliance with the Joint Commission and state and federal agencies. Experience developing a high performing flexible workforce. Demonstrated experience developing budgets, establishing priorities, and negotiating resource issues. Experience modeling service excellence principles/standards. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers. Desired Qualifications:
Prior work experience in a community hospital setting. Previous work experience in a large academic medical center. Certification in nursing administration or clinical area is highly desired. Experience working in a union environment.
