Director of Nursing Job Purpose:
The Director of Nursing (DON) is a registered nurse (RN) responsible for the overall clinical operations of the facility. This includes directing and supervising nursing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing budgets, and fostering a positive and efficient work environment that prioritizes patient care. The DON plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of care and upholding the facility's commitment to quality and safety.Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies, procedures, and protocols that align with current best practices, regulatory requirements, and company standards. Manage and supervise nursing staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions. Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet patient needs and maintain appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios. Develop and manage the nursing department's budget, monitoring expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities. Collaborate with other department heads to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care. Monitor patient care quality and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction. Maintain accurate and complete medical records and documentation in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards. Investigate and resolve patient complaints and incidents, taking appropriate corrective actions. Promote a positive and supportive work environment that fosters teamwork, collaboration, and professional development among nursing staff. Stay current with advancements in nursing practices, technologies, and regulations through continuing education and professional development activities. Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes related to nursing and patient care. Act as a liaison between nursing staff, physicians, other healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. Oversee medication management practices, ensuring safe and accurate administration of medications. Participate in the development and implementation of infection control policies and procedures. Conduct regular rounds to assess patient care, staff performance, and overall unit operations. Provide direct patient care as needed, particularly in emergency situations.Required Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of operationRequired Experience:
Minimum of five years of progressive nursing leadership experience, preferably in a behavioral health or substance abuse treatment setting. Demonstrated experience in managing and developing nursing staff. Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CARF). Proven ability to develop and implement policies and procedures related to nursing care. Experience with budget management and resource allocation.Required Skills and Abilities:
Strong clinical skills and knowledge of current nursing practices. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Ability to effectively manage and motivate a team. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Ability to work collaboratively with other departments and stakeholders. Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations related to healthcare. Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
