Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Occupational Therapy Director is responsible for the clinical oversight of the Occupational Therapy Department staff. Director oversees and coordinates the clinical education and competency process for the Occupational Therapy staff, including direct supervision of certified Occupational Therapy assistants (COTAs) and Rehabilitation Technicians. The Director ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and professional standards. The role includes oversight of Occupational Therapy policy and procedure manual addressing scope of care, evaluation/treatment standards, discharge planning and documentation. Director evaluates and treats patients 70% of the time and assists with program development and other administrative tasks, as assigned, the remaining 30% of the time. Employee will function in accordance with their State Practice Act.PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential FunctionDirector Functions________________________________________Leadership / Administrative Functions- Establishes departmental goals, policies, and performance standards consistent with hospital strategic objectives and CDPH requirements
- Present Occupational Therapy Policies and Procedures to Medical Staff Executive Committee, Administration and Governing Board for review and approval annually
- Assesses, introduces, and improves performance competencies
- Maintains current knowledge of clinical developments, new techniques, and regulatory updates, as they pertain to Occupational Therapy Services, etc.
- Creates and implements required policies and procedures as well as staff Clinical Competencies
- Develops and manages the annual Occupational Therapy budget, including staffing, supplies, and capital requests. Monitors productivity, revenue, and expenses to meet financial targets
- Conduct review of OT charts for policy adherence and provide quarterly reports to Executive leadership and Quality Committee and annual report to Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Attends department meetings and training, as well as participates in quality improvement programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.________________________________________Staffing Functions
- Ensures OT department licensed personnel maintain current, required credentials
- Collaborates with Human Resources on recruitment, retention, and professional development strategies for the Occupational Therapy team
- Develop staffing plan to ensure sufficient OT coverage based on patient volume and review with Department Manager
- Oversee Occupational Therapy staff including Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and Rehab Technicians
- Oversee coordination of activity therapy services when appropriate
- Acts as a Preceptor and Mentor
- Approves or denies requests for continuing education, time off, and overtime for departmental staff within established guidelines
- Ensure Supervisor, or designated Occupational Therapist, participates in orientation for new hospital employees
- Division of duties involve 70% patient care and 30% administrative tasks based on the needs of the department
- Well-developed ability to act as a clinical resource (e.g. assisting with new staff orientation, providing in-services to students, therapy and medical staff, participation in clinical education, and initiating dissemination of clinical information, to name a few).
- Manages the student program and serves as the liaison with university training programs________________________________________Compliance Functions
- Ensures compliance with CDPH (Title 22), CMS, and Joint Commission standards relevant to occupational therapy
- Promotes a Culture of Safety by acting as a team player and team support person
- Behavior and Actions while at work serve to promote a professional, friendly, and functional department
- Maintains patient confidentiality within the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines________________________________________Financial Functions

- Completes tasks in a prompt, pleasant, and helpful manner when greeting patients, families, visitors, and co-workers
- Effectively utilizes the Cerner Electronic Medical Record and documents all communication regarding patients
