Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 is one of the 29 intermediate units that provide a wide array of services to member school districts, including student services, training and technical assistance, online learning, and customized programs and services. IU8 includes four counties comprised of 35 school districts (approximately 98 schools) and five Career Technical Centers. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 serves approximately 47,000 students across four counties within 3500 square miles. Our service area includes four counties: Blair, Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria. We have five different office locations within our service area: Altoona, Duncansville, Ebensburg, Richland, and Somerset. AIU8 offers opportunities for everyone, and our service area spans a broad range of living environments, from rural to densely populated city areas.
Job Summary:
The Supervisor of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy provides effective and compliant supervision and management to IU8 professionals and support personnel, as well as support to school districts and community partners serving learners ages 3-21. This position assists in the supervision, coordination, and evaluation of these services. The responsibilities include assisting with interviewing and hiring employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. This position includes supervising the work assignments and training needs of the program. This position assists the administration in the financial management of program budgets.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Yes Direct supervision to assigned professional, managerial, and support positions, including: Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants, Manager of Student Data and Information Systems, School-Based Access Coordinator, and Secretaries.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and evaluate personnel, including the completion of walkthroughs, informal observations, and formal observations of staff performance. Evaluate the performance of assigned staff using the appropriate evaluation procedures and corresponding forms. Make recommendations according to staff needs, including development of improvement plans. Support the Human Resources Department in the interviewing and hiring process, contractual issues, disciplinary process, and the requirements for certification. Support the program's implementation of IDEA and Chapter 14 processes for eligible children. Provides supervision and oversight to the IU data team who facilitate collection and maintenance of IU student data for local and state reporting. Provide supervision and oversight to the team who facilitate all School Based ACCESS Program (SBAP) duties and leads internal guidance and direction of processes and procedures for staff reporting and internal collection for all Medical ACCESS reporting. Develop physical and occupational therapy organizational strategies by contributing information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction consistent with the long-term needs and goals of the IU8 mission. Provide guidance and recommendations for appropriate and valid assessment tools and evaluative techniques for staff use. Develop and use of appropriate school-based performance appraisals for staff Establish physical and occupational therapy operational strategies by evaluating trends, determining production, productivity, quality and patient-service strategies. Provide opportunities for growth of the Physical and Occupational Therapy program. Pursue and secure contracts with member school districts to provide Physical and Occupational Therapy services and support. Guide professional growth of staff to include appropriate options to satisfy necessary continued education requirements. Provide support to staff on the designing and implementation of appropriate physical and occupational therapy interventions for students serviced in educational programs. Contribute support and ongoing management of the physical and occupational therapy program including documentation, communications, record keeping, billing and coordination and maintenance of supplies within the physical therapy program. Provide program support through direct assessment and treatment of students as necessary. Provide orientation and support for new staff. Develop/monitor budget(s) Schedule personnel and monitor personnel schedules. Effectively allocate resources. Delegate appropriately. Maintain accurate files and records with attention to timelines. Effectively manage self and manage conflict. Plan for program/service improvement. Support, inspire, and motivate colleagues, subordinates, and/or clients to maintain or enhance a higher level of functioning. Establish and promote high expectations for self/staff/program. Recognize, analyze and solve a variety of problems. Collect and use data to develop and monitor effectiveness of programs and interventions. Use appropriate formal and informal evaluation instruments and assessment techniques to evaluate program and program needs on a continuous basis. Use technology to support required work, documents, and reporting systems efficiently and effectively. Collaborate as a member of a team, committee and /or work group, as well as with customers. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and sensitivity in a range of interpersonal relations. Communicate effectively with staff and member school districts. Locates and participates in activities to meet one's identified professional development needs. Utilizes the skills attained from professional development activities for program improvement. Provides information on program and staffing needs by determining what new programs and/or changes to current programs are needed and communicating those needs to the Department Director. Must have reliable transportation to visit all job sites. And other duties as assigned by the Chief Education Officer, Executive Director and/or his/her designee and in accordance with Board Policy and local, state, and federal requirements.
Requirements:
At minimum, master's degree in physical therapy or occupational therapy License to practice Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy by the Pennsylvania State Board of Licensure At least 5 years of satisfactory experience in school-based therapy, assessment, and treatment Current and acceptable clearances: Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse History), Act 114 (PDE Fingerprinting), PDE6004 (Arrest & Conviction), and Act 168 (PA Sexual Misconduct background) Upon hire, all new employees must obtain a certificate of medical examination as well as a tuberculosis test as required under Chapter 14 of the Public School Code, 24 P.S. §§14-1416, 14-1418; 22 PA Code §49.12(b) (regarding education); and 28 Pa Code §23.44 (regarding health and safety).

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
The work environment is office settings, school and classroom settings, educational settings in community locations. Depending on the activity, some environments outside the school building and in the community may be required. Regular travel within IU8 region and some statewide travel with overnight stays may be required. Minimal travel outside of Pennsylvania may also be required.
