Silver Sneakers Instructor Reports to: Group Exercise Coordinator/Wellness Director

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Group Exercise Coordinator/Wellness Director, a Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within the class. Modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the Group Exercise Coordinator, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals Share weekly updates and answer questions regarding YMCA programs and events Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants' capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture Be responsible for subbing for other group exercise instructors as needed Keeps accurate class attendance records Maintain cleanliness and organization of equipment used for the fitness studio Attend all initial and ongoing trainings and monthly staff meetings Evaluate the fitness equipment and report the needs to the Group Exercise Coordinator Maintain certifications and stay current with exercise techniques Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Silver Sneakers certification in Silver Sneakers Classic and/or Silver Sneakers Yoga is preferred, willing to train the right candidate Minimum age of 18 Valid Driver's License or photo ID, reliable transportation, and working phone number Knowledge, skill, and ability to learn group exercise choreography and instruction Knowledge and understanding of kinesiology and exercise for all populations Knowledge, skill, and ability regarding exercise techniques and proper use of exercise equipment Strong personal commitment to overall wellness and have a positive attitude Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) Have, or be in the process of obtaining CPR/AED, Basic First Aid Ability to pass background checks in accordance with all Berwick Area YMCA policies for child abuse prevention
