JOB DESCRIPTION
Marriage and Family Therapist
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Supervised by:

Patients, family, IDG and other health care team members
JOB SUMMARY
To provide emotional, behavioral and psychological support when needed to the Hospice patient/family. Works with individual patients, couples and families. Even when treating individuals, therapists focus on family systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
Educational/Degree:
Possesses a masters or doctoral degree, which qualifies for licensure or certification as a Marriage and Family Therapist pursuant to state law in which the individual is furnishing services
Training/Licensure:
Licensure or certification as a Marriage and Family Therapist pursuant to state law in which the individual is furnishing services
Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
Ability to work independently, make accurate, and at times, quick judgments. Ability to respond appropriately to crisis outside of a hospital setting. Acceptance of and adaptability to different social, racial, cultural and religious modes
Experience:
Has performed at least two years or 3,000 hours of post master's degree clinical supervised experience in marriage and family therapy in an appropriate setting, e.g., a hospital, SNF, private practice or clinic
JOB FACTORS
Physical Requirements:
Requires minimal physical effort most of the day including kneeling, squatting, reaching, twisting, climbing, walking, exposure to temperature and humidity changes and minimal assist in lifting and/or transferring of a 100-pound patient. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use appropriate adaptive devices that will enable senses to function at a level required to meet the essential duties of the position. Must provide evidence of annual TB test and other state-required tests or examinations.
Mental Requirements:
Must be able to work independently, make judgments based on assessments and data available and act accordingly. Must be flexible, innovative and possess good interpersonal skills. Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress and demonstrate emotional stability.
Working Conditions:
Be able to tolerate exposure to elements including, but not limited to, odors, blood, body fluids and excrements, adverse environmental conditions and hazardous materials.
Transportation:
Must have a current valid driver's license, auto liability insurance and reliable transportation.
Essential Functions:
1. Provide direct support and/or counsel to patients/families in keeping with patients'/families' beliefs. 2. Assess each patient's situation and determine the best type/types of techniques for treatment. 3. Participate in IDG conference, as assigned, or requested, by exploring and assessing the potential needs of patients/families and reporting on services as indicated. 4. Assess patients to identify their emotional, behavioral and psychological needs. 5. Maintain proper records of visits to patients/families. 6. Coordinate patient treatment with other specialists as indicated, e.g. psychologist, psychiatrists and social worker. 7. Help patients process their reactions and adjust to difficult changes that relate to marriage and family dynamics, e.g., divorce. 8. Create a plan of care that assists patients in developing coping strategies and decision-making skills. 9. Refer patients to other specialists, resources or services. 10. Evaluate family relationships and development to understand how such issues affect the patient's mental health.
