Job Description

Join a team of more than 30 board-certified clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, dieticians, and nursing staff! Founded in 1965, our Division of Genetics and Genomics provides comprehensive clinical care including diagnostics, genetic counseling, and individualized management in concert with other specialties at Boston Children's Hospital. Our Program in Clinical Genetics seeks a genetic counselor to join physicians, NPs and a PA who strive to diagnose and treat people with a broad variety of genetic diseases. We specialize in finding answers for complex and hard-to-diagnose genetic conditions, sometimes applying new technologies through our research labs when existing genetic tests are negative or inconclusive. We are seeking a Genetic Counselor for direct patient care with onsite presence 2 days per week at one of our satellite locations—either Weymouth or Waltham—as well as 1-2 days per week onsite at our 2 Brookline Place location. Key Responsibilities Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for specific hereditary disorders. Interprets family history, clinical and genetic findings to predict risk to patient. Obtains and reviews medical, developmental and family history information as part of diagnostic team. Ascertains needs and agendas of patients/ families. Screens referrals for outpatient service identifying hospital services needed for patient and suggesting alternative measures for utilizing these services. Responds to inquiries related to diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks, genetic testing and pregnancy exposures. Coordinates one or more clinics in assigned Department/Division/Program. Devises and monitors appointments and schedules for multiple providers. Assists in interviewing, orientation and training of other genetic counselors and study staff. Develops and participates in genetics education programs for physicians, other health professionals and lay populations. Trains, supervises, and evaluates graduate level counseling students. Collaborates in developing written documents and web-based materials for a variety of purposes including journal publications and conference presentations.

Genetic Counseling Experience:
Good communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions. Good analytical and problem-solving skills in order to collect information/samples from a wide variety of sources. The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of clinical, scientific, or technical principles, theories, and concepts and in-depth, cross-functional experience-based knowledge. Well-developed writing skills.
Licensure/ Certifications:
Current Massachusetts license as a Genetic Counselor Current Genetic Counselor certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
