About BAGLY Founded in 1980, the Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth (BAGLY) is an organization led by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth to meet the core physical, social, and developmental needs of Greater Boston's LGBTQ+ youth community. Today, BAGLY provides community-based leadership development, health promotion, and social support programs for Massachusetts' LGBTQ youth communities, and is a leader in local and national LGBTQ+ youth advocacy. About This Position The Peer Health Educator is a youth leadership role that supports BAGLY's Health & Wellness programming by providing peer-to-peer education, outreach, and engagement related to sexual and reproductive health, mental wellness, and LGBTQ+ affirming care. Peer Health Educators work under the supervision of the ASE Health & Wellness Educator and the Health & Wellness Program Manager, serving as trusted messengers who connect youth to accurate information, resources, and supportive services. Peer Health Educators are peer leaders who help ensure that programming remains relevant, accessible, and responsive to the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ young people. Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to): Peer Education & Facilitation Co-facilitate workshops, discussions, and educational activities on sexual and reproductive health, consent, relationships, and harm reduction Co-facilitate workshops, discussions, and educational activities related to peer leadership and youth development Support the delivery of the "Our Care in Action" Adolescent Sexuality Education Program. Engage participants in a respectful, inclusive, and non-judgmental manner. Adapt communication styles to meet the needs of diverse age groups (ages 11-24). Outreach & Youth Engagement Assist with recruitment of program participants through peer networks, social media, and community events. Represent BAGLY at community outreach events, schools, and partner sites as needed. Serve as a relatable point of contact for youth seeking information or support. Resource Navigation & Referrals Connect peers to appropriate BAGLY programs, services, and community resources. Work collaboratively with staff to ensure safe and appropriate referrals. Encourage help-seeking behavior among peers when needed. Program Support Participate in program planning meetings and trainings. Provide feedback to staff on curriculum relevance and youth needs. Assist with data collection, surveys, and participant feedback processes. Help maintain safe, welcoming, and affirming program spaces. Leadership Development Build skills in facilitation, public speaking, advocacy, and teamwork. Model healthy communication, boundaries, and professionalism. Support newer Peer Health Educators through mentorship when applicable Basic Qualifications Possess HS diploma/equivalent. 3 years of relevant experience may be substituted. Strong familiarity/allyship with issues of particular relevance to intersectional identities within the LGBTQ+ community, especially youth, BIPOC and transgender/nonbinary people. Interest in sexual health, wellness, and youth advocacy. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with peers. Willingness to learn and engage in training on: Trauma-informed care Sexual health education Confidentiality Mandated reporting basics LGBTQ+ affirming practices Ability to work collaboratively with staff and other youth leaders. Comfortable working in diverse environments with youth from different backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in youth leadership, peer education, or community organizing. Lived experience as an LGBTQ+ young person, particularly BIPOC and/or transgender/nonbinary youth. Experience speaking publicly or facilitating group activities. This position has the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations: Sit at a computer station for extended periods of time Ability to keyboard for extended periods of time Requires handling average-weight objects up to 15-20 pounds, and occasionally assisting patients Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment Ability to travel to community-based organizations and venues such as: schools, youth & family shelters, community centers etc. to perform outreach activities. The successful candidate must pass a criminal background check (CORI/SORI) as a condition of employment at BAGLY.
Starting Hourly Rate:
