Full Job Description Header Overview:
The Creating Opportunities to Achieve Community Health (COACH) project is designed to build substance misuse/mental health promotion infrastructure to serve Detroit youth. COACH will utilize evidence-based alcohol and drug prevention and mental health promotion strategies through basketball league activities. Prevention specialists will work to enhance youth participants' protective factors and to educate family members and others in the community.

This is a grant funded position. Evening hours required.
General Position Description:
The Prevention Specialist works in the community to facilitate Alcohol and other drug prevention and holistic mental health promotion services utilizing Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) to:
  • Empower youth, families and communities to promote alcohol and drug free lifestyles.
  • Build community structures to support healthy lifestyles.
  • Encourage and support coordinated, systemic approaches to promote the prevention of substance use disorders and wholistic mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Create and sustain systems and structures that build protective factors and resilience to alcohol and drug use, reduce its consequences and the effects of trauma, and encourage healthy thought processes and behaviors in children, families, and communities.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Fundamental approaches, strategies, and curricula for: o Substance use prevention o Holistic Mental Health promotion and wellness
  • Engaging audiences of differing sizes, demographics, etc.
  • Effective Public speaking
  • Conflict resolution
Responsibilities:
  • Become proficient in the delivery of evidence-based practices (EBPs): o SPORT Prevention + Wellness o Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) o Question Persuade Refer (QPR)
  • Effectively deliver EBP prevention and mental health promotion curricula to: o 11-14 year old youth o Their parent(s), guardian(s), and/or other family participating in COACH o Coaches o Community organizations and groups
  • Collaborate with athletic organization/personnel, schools, parent-teacher groups, public health educators, civic organizations, church groups, and other youth and community organizations to provide information and awareness on: Alcohol and other drugs, Suicide Prevention, and trauma.
  • Network with other social service agencies including prevention, treatment, mental health, etc., to develop and provide a comprehensive system of holistic services, identify needs, and make referrals as necessary.
  • Participate in meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in activities such as health fairs or other community events for the purpose of promoting the COACH project.
  • Enter all required data and complete documentation for all program activities as required,
  • Participate in development of reports according to established deadlines.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the community resource list, media reference list, curriculum inventory, program materials inventory, etc., related to the COACH project.
  • Attend training, seminars, workshops, and classes to achieve required credentials and/or continuing education as required by the agency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and/President CEO to meet program and agency objectives.
Academic Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in a behavioral health or human services field, health education or education, preferred, or a combination of coursework, training, and experience in SUD prevention programming.
Training & Experience:
Combination of education and experience represented by: Minimum of 2 years' experience working in Substance Use Disorder, Public Health, and/or Mental Health or related field prevention activities. Experience in Human Services, Mental Health, community organization, program development and/or management, required. Minimum - One year's experience in public speaking. Proficiency in Microsoft computer programs.
Preferred:
Currently a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or Certified Prevention Consultant (CPC) by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP), or on a CPS Development Plan. Must be eligible and to secure a Development Plan within 30 days of hire.
  • Experience delivering prevention and Mental health wellness messages to diverse age groups. Experience working with and monitoring others, e.g. the coaches.
  • Knowledge and experience in: o SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnership for Success o SPORT Prevention + Wellness EBP o Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) EBP o Question Persuade Refer (QPR) EBP
  • Knowledge and experience with logistics of basketball or other youth sports leagues.
  • Experience in community organization, coalition development and participation.
Other Requirements:
  • Reliable transportation for community travel or a plan to secure it within 30 days of hire.
