Kids Cook! uses an integrated curriculum, including nutrition, literature, art, cultures of the world, math, science, social studies, and geography. Purpose:
Kids Cook! Nutrition Educator will implement the multicultural cooking and nutrition education curriculum with students. This includes hands-on cooking classes for K-6 students and the organization of individual classroom lessons.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide direct education to elementary and middle school students using the Kids Cook! curriculum in assigned school. Manage class schedule to include 90% teacher participation in coordination with school staff and KC! admin team. Attend all required unit trainings and maintain strong understanding of unit curriculum. Coordinate monthly cafeteria tastings with the school and interact with the students providing local produce tasting. Collaborate with school personnel to build a healthy school environment. Communicate responsibly with the KC! admin team, school staff, parents and the parent teacher organization including: Written correspondence, attending school staff meetings when appropriate, attending parent/teacher meeting as needed. Demonstrate excellent communication and organization skills and the ability to work well with adults and children in the school environment. Orient, train and lead school staff and volunteers in the classroom to cook with students. Maintain classroom, inventory and supply records with a high degree of precision. Accurately complete reports by unit deadlines. Transport all classroom and needed materials to school from the Kids Cook! office. Meets APS/Kids Cook! dress code at school, business casual dress code when in office and professional business attire when in business situations.
Additional Job Functions:
Collaborate with community school coordinator and/or family liaison in assigned school to support the needs of the school community. Be available to work some evenings, as needed, to host large group family nights using Kids Cook! curriculum or supporting school family events. Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Postsecondary education in Nutrition, Culinary or Education field. Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating integrity and dedication to the mission and vision of Kids Cook! Excellent communication skills to support community building and collaboration. Comfortable being self-reflective and incorporating feedback when given. Excellent presentation skills - comfortable presenting to large groups and encouraging group participation. Ability to work independently and organize and manage daily work. Proactive approach to problem solving with strong decision-making skills. Access to a computer for daily monitoring of Kids Cook! email, data reporting tools, and schedule. Knowledge of fundamental cooking techniques such as following a recipe, measuring, and using a knife. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Two years of experience working in Nutrition, Culinary or Education field. Two years of experience working in educational setting with adults and children. Comfortable working in the kitchen and maintaining food safety and sanitation standards. Health-minded around nutrition and daily physical activity. Prior experience using Google Suite tools for daily work. Spanish-speaking preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Daily exposure to children and people in a school and kitchen environments should be expected. Work is performed in a highly active environment with exposure to a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a diverse employee and client population. Position may require the occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
