This position provides health education through group and individual encounters and engages community members in a variety of settings on identified and emerging health issues in Cleveland County. This position frequently is required to provide evening and weekend educational programs and support for Health Department events.Essential Functions and Responsibilities include:
Provide health education programming to various audiences throughout the county. Program topics may include but are not limited to physical activity opportunities, nutrition education (including the Med-South Lifestyle Program and the T2 Diabetes Prevention Program), substance abuse prevention, reproductive health and safety, chronic disease prevention and personal safety/hygiene. Delivery of evidence-based, medically accurate and timely health education programming to a variety of audiences throughout the county, including but not limited to senior centers, rescue missions, health councils, and community groups upon request. Specifically targeted are groups who request the Med-South Lifestyle Program as well as the T2 Diabetes Prevention Program. Assist in delivering classroom-based instruction providing the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention curriculum and the Too Good For Drugs substance abuse prevention curriculum in Cleveland County Schools as support/backup for other Community Health Educators. Participate in agency and community-sponsored coalitions addressing health topics including regular attendance at coalition/committee meetings and special events sponsored by the coalitions. Participation may include but is not limited to the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, the Strong Teens Youth Council, the Drug Free Cleveland County Coalition and the Minority Health Council. Participate in community engagement events to represent the Cleveland County Health Department such as health fairs and back-to-school events; organize, promote and implement special events focusing on health education such as National Public Health Week, National Exercise Day, Lunch and Learn opportunities for employees to promote healthy lifestyle choices Provide general support for all activities involving the health education/health promotion unit and the clinical areas of the Cleveland County Health Department on an as-needed basis. The responsibilities and duties outlined above are intended to provide a general outline and summary of this role. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed, with or without notice, to meet the needs of the department and county.Education & Experience:
Bachelors Degree in health education, health promotion, public health or related field and one year of experience in public health education or related experience dealing with teaching and community outreach. 2 years of relevant work experience may be substituted for 1 year of required education. Certification as CHES is encouraged, but not required.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Exhibit competency in developing, implementing and evaluating designated programs (selected reproductive health and safety curriculum, Stacked Deck gambling prevention curriculum) as well as community health programs educating on specific health issues Ability to organize and direct activities for a variety of audiences Thorough knowledge of the functions of public health agencies Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in preparing and disseminating educational information and programs Thorough knowledge of techniques involved in preparing graphic materials, exhibits and visual aids Ability to present ideas effectively both orally and in writing Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, educational and community organizations Work Environment /Physical Requirements:

Valid drivers license and insurable driving record Obtain and maintain certification in the use of the SASSI (Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory) as a component of the SOAR diversion program for students Obtain and maintain certification as an instructor for both the CPR-BLS program for CCHD employees Obtain and maintain certification as an instructor for the Safe Sitter educational program.Work Location:
This role must work from the location identified at the time of hire with work travel required as needed. Any change of work location, even on a short-term or interim basis, must be reviewed by the Supervisor and HR for approval.Additional information:
