Job Description
Community Health Educator Job Summary Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah seeks a skilled and dynamic Community Health Educator (CHE) to join the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement. The successful candidate will assist with planning, implementation, and evaluation of Huntsman Cancer Institute's community outreach and engagement efforts, which aim to improve knowledge and health behaviors through screening, risk reduction interventions, prevention education, promotion of clinical trials, and engagement in research. As an integrated staff member of the Community Outreach and Engagement team, the CHE will work in diverse, community-based settings in rural, urban, frontier, and Tribal areas of the five-state
Mountain West:
Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Occasional evening and weekend work, as well as frequent regional travel. This requires flexibility and the ability to drive one's own vehicle and University vehicles. Daily tasks can be completed in a hybrid working environment with a mix of in-person commitments and virtual settings. Responsibilities Partnership and Capacity Building Build and maintain academic, clinical, and community partnerships to enable access to and delivery of culturally appropriate, evidence-based cancer information and education, to all communities Identify specific ways community education and outreach can enhance the research, clinical, and outreach efforts of Huntsman Cancer Institute Engage with community leaders to increase awareness of Huntsman Cancer Institute's mission, programs, and services Work internally with administrative, clinical, research, and education staff to develop and implement evidence-based screening and prevention interventions including but not limited to, presentations, health events, webinars, social media, research study recruitment, etc. Community Event Planning and Staffing Coordinate with stakeholders to participate in local health events across all areas and communities of the five-stateMountain West:
Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming Adapt program planning principles and methods to tailored cancer screening and prevention education interventions, including virtual programming Partner with the mobile cancer screening program (Cancer Screening and Education Bus) to improve screening and education efforts in uninsured, underinsured, underserved, and underrepresented populations Prevention Education and Research Understand and translate Huntsman Cancer Institute's mission, vision, and goals into community outreach and engagement programming. Utilize research methods to collect, analyze, and report data, including working with the University of Utah Internal Review Board and with principal investigators and researchers Evaluate research and public health data to inform ongoing program planning and intervention efforts. Minimum Qualifications There are two levels in the Health Educator position.Health Educator I:
Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Ability to demonstrate entry level competence in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.Health Educator II:
Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field, and four or more years of health education experience or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Must also possess and maintain certification as a CHES, MCHES, or CPH. Ability to demonstrate working-level professional knowledge in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required. Training in a specific health area may be preferred. This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations. PreferencesTHE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHALL
Demonstrate high proficiency in written and verbal communication. Demonstrate excellent organizational, planning, and critical thinking skills Maintain current Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification, in addition to EPIC, HIPAA, Clinical Trials, Patient Navigation, and Defensive Driver trainings. These trainings may be taken upon receiving a job offer. Understand the needs of communities throughout Utah and the Mountain WestPREFERENCES
Master's degree in health education, health promotion, community or public health, health sciences, health administration, or another health-related field Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or other relevant certification(s) Bilingual in English and Spanish Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods (e.g., questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups) 1-3 years' experience working in community settings and with diverse populations.
