JOB DESCRIPTION
The Assistant Director of Coding Education serves as a strategic leader within an academic medical center responsible for developing, implementing, and advancing coding education programs across both facility and professional fee (Profee) domains. This role supports highly complex clinical environments including a Level I Trauma Center, teaching hospitals, and faculty practice plans. The leader partners with physicians, residents, CDI, and Revenue Cycle stakeholders to ensure accurate coding, regulatory compliance, and optimal reimbursement while supporting the academic mission of education, research, and clinical excellence.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Strategic Leadership & Academic Integration Lead the design and execution of coding education strategies aligned with academic medical center priorities including teaching, research, and clinical care. Partner with physician leadership, residents, fellows, and faculty practice groups to support documentation and coding excellence. Standardize coding education across hospital and faculty practice environments. Coding Education (Facility & Profee) Develop and deliver advanced education on E/M leveling (2021 & 2023 guidelines), trauma and emergency services, surgical and procedural coding, injection and infusion services, and specialty-specific coding. Provide real-time and retrospective education to coders, physicians, and clinical staff. Support onboarding and ongoing competency development programs. Audit, Compliance & Performance Improvement Translate audit findings into targeted education plans. Monitor coding accuracy, productivity, and denial trends. Ensure adherence to CMS, CPT, ICD-10, and regulatory standards. Partner with Compliance and Revenue Integrity to mitigate risk in a teaching environment. Technology & Innovation Leverage Epic and 3M platforms to optimize coding workflows and educational delivery. Develop training on system edits, work queues, and charge capture processes. Partner with IT on system enhancements and upgrades. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate across Coding, CDI, Compliance, Revenue Integrity, and clinical departments. Serve as liaison between academic and operational teams. Support change management efforts tied to regulatory, payer, and system updates. Team Development Mentor coding educators and senior coders. Build career pathways and competency frameworks. Foster a culture of continuous learning, academic collaboration, and performance excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Experience 7-10+ years of coding experience across both facility and professional fee environments. Leadership experience in coding education, auditing, or training. Experience within an academic medical center or teaching hospital strongly preferred. Expertise in trauma, emergency department, and multi-specialty coding. Certifications RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC, CPMA or equivalent certification required. Technical Skills Proficiency with Epic EMR and 3M coding/encoder tools. Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, and CMS guidelines. Experience with CAC, audits, and charge capture workflows. Core Competencies Leadership, communication, regulatory expertise, analytical thinking, change management, and academic engagement. #
