Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The HIM Team Lead supports the daily operations of the Health Information Management department under the direction and leadership of the HIM Director. This role mentors and guides HIM staff, oversees daily coding and documentation workflows, and helps ensure medical records are complete, accurate, secure. The HIM Team Lead works closely with physicians, clinical departments, leadership, and revenue cycle teams to support regulatory compliance, documentation quality, and timely coding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Each position will be responsible for any additional tasks and responsibilities outlined in the specific department, position or orientation checklist.
General:
Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Responds appropriately and effectively to emergency situations in accordance with hospital protocols. Demonstrates respect, trust, safety, confidentiality, and cooperation in all interactions with patients, families, practitioners, and colleagues. Provides excellence in internal and external customer service and maintains a positive image of the hospital at all times.
Role-Specific:
Supports daily HIM operations under the direction of the HIM Director Serves as a mentor and resource to HIM staff and assists with training and skill development Oversees medical record workflows including chart completion, record retention, release of information, and scanning/indexing Maintains data integrity within the electronic health record (EHR) Provides oversight of inpatient, outpatient, swing bed, and professional coding functions Collaborates with clinical departments to address documentation gaps impacting quality and reimbursement Leads denial tracking, trending, and root'cause analysis activities Supports chart audits and regulatory readiness efforts Monitors Discharged Not Final Billed (DNFB) accounts and coordinates timely chart completion and coding Assists with denial management activities and participates in the Denial Management Committee Tracks coding trends and identifies opportunities for education or workflow improvement Works closely with Information Technology, Nursing Informatics, Nursing, Ancillary Departments, Patient Financial Services, Provider Services, leadership, and physicians Maintains current knowledge of HIM regulations and standards including HIPAA, CMS, Release of Information requirements, Medical Staff Bylaws, and Joint Commission standards Supports denial prevention through staff education and process improvement Reviews productivity and accuracy reports to support timely and accurate billing In coordination with the HIM Director, assists with interviewing and training of new employees Promotes a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement Performs other duties within the scope of the position as assigned
