Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform specialized support to students requiring advanced health maintenance and assistance with personal hygiene; responsible for integrating significant custodial health care services with instructional support.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The School Health Services Specialist- LVN is commonly referred to as a health paraprofessional.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor students with health conditions that require periodic observation and administration of regularly scheduled medications according to written prescriptions, protocols, and instructions; inform staff of student health conditions and changes. Assess the priority and acuity of medical situations and apply appropriate first-aid and/or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR); document incidents and inform appropriate staff members, paramedic, administrator, and parent/guardian of actions taken; make 911 calls, as necessary. Assist students with personal care activities including physical hygiene, dispensing medications, tube feeding, limited invasive connections, and other applications in compliance with the Individualized Student Health Plan (ISHP) and other medical and legal requirements. Monitor students for hygiene-related health issues; document test findings and record information into student data records. Independently perform health care procedures and health screens following established procedures as trained and authorized as a licensed healthcare professional. Receive and assist ill or sick students and contact parents as necessary for students to be taken home; monitor attendance trends for children with communicable diseases and notify appropriate District personnel of attendance changes. Administer medications to students; document student charts of any medical care including medical alerts; perform first aid procedures for students. Demonstrate and provide specific invasive health care support services such as catheterization, tracheostomy care, oral motor feeding, gastro-intestinal feeding, respiration suctioning, observation of neurological symptoms, range of motion therapy, according to established clinical protocols and scope of clinical licensure. Work with parents to set up required forms that contain instructions for administering medications; administer medications according to prescription and protocol; logs data including but not limited to time and nature of medication; ensure that medicine cabinets are secure. Record data on student health screens, test results, and other demographic information for use in recurring reports and program assessments; record information for all accidents, communicable diseases, and potential child abuse. Compile health-related data for reports to the District and external agencies; maintain up-to-date emergency contact cards; ensure that phone contacts and other protocols are current. Under the guidance of a RN, may coordinate, prepare, facilitate, and conduct in-service training sessions for Health Service Clerks, Instructional Aides, teachers, and resource staff. Set up and maintain medical files; assemble, collate, and prepare materials for distribution; post information onto manual and computerized records and files using established formats and forms. Review student records for proper immunizations; alert parents of needed immunizations and maintain communication until records of immunization are provided. Perform routine clerical duties; prepare correspondence, forms, notices and referrals, including accident reports; maintains files and duplicates materials as needed. Coordinate between parents and the school items such as PE exemptions; document written materials in student files. Maintain health office and/or treatment room in sanitary condition; ensure adequate stock of medical equipment used for regular treatments; ensure health and first-aid supplies are properly inventoried and at sufficient levels; distribute supplies as needed. Participate in staff or student meetings to share information about assigned programs. May serve as a team leader for emergency response and may work with emergency response teams to coordinate first lines of triage.OTHER DUTIES

Perform related duties as assigned, which are within the scope of the duties in this job classification.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: a High School diploma or equivalent and college-level coursework in health services, nursing, or closely related field and three (3) years experience working in the health services profession. An active and unrestricted California LVN License. Additional higher education may substitute for some experience.Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid Unrestricted California Licensed Vocational Nurse certification Valid First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certificate. May require a valid California Driver's License.Knowledge of:
Student health services related to injuries and illnesses. District policies, procedures and practices related to health issues, medical terminology, and related activities. First Aid and age-appropriate CPR techniques. Health and safety regulations. Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Record-keeping techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Use and application of an automated external defibrillator (AED). HIPPA and FERPA as it relates to student confidential medical records and history.Ability to:
Assess and provide first aid care to ill and injured students and staff. Assist individuals with specialized health care needs. Prepare and maintain a variety of medical-related records, logs and files. Establish and maintain files, records, reports and referrals. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Meet schedules and timelines. Plan and organize work. Work confidentially with discretion. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Read, explain and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Apply appropriate care and procedures related to ill or injured students. Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, duplicating and maintaining records. Operate computer and medical equipment as required.WORKING CONDITIONS
