GI Tech Specialist - Digestive Health Center (1.0 Days) 3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars Cedar Rapids, IA 52403 Work Shift Day Scheduled Weekly Hours 40 Summary This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by facilitating the provisions of patient care by performing patient care tasks and support functions as delegated under the supervision of the licensed nurse. The GI Technical Specialist fulfills an expanded role by performing additional department specific procedures and responsibilities. Job Description Job Duties Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome. Demonstrates intervention and evaluation of clinical skills with patients. Observes and communicates to the licensed nurse any changes in patient condition and pertinent information regarding needs of the patient and/or significant others. Responds according to scope of practice to emergencies and life threatening situations. Practices cost containment efforts on a shift to shift basis by efficient use of time and resources, i.e., man-hours, patient charges, equipment, supplies, etc. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures and correct use of protective barrier equipment. Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards. Assists the physician while performing endoscopic procedures, including obtaining tissues and biopsies. Demonstrates correct process for sending in scopes for repairs in timely manner. Maintains endoscopes and all accessories in working order and provides preventative maintenance. Organizes and maintains records for scope repairs on each scope. Maintains appropriate clean/dirty techniques in decontamination room. Assumes responsibility for setting up and passing instruments, labeling medications, holding scopes/biopsies, loops and other needed items, assisting the surgeon/physician and assists with circulating duties as necessary. Assists in preparing the procedure room for procedure, obtaining needed equipment and supplies. Maintains working knowledge of assembly and function of endoscopy equipment. Anticipates the needs of equipment by the physician during a procedure utilizing physician preference cards. Handles and cares for specimens according to policy/procedure. Assists with positioning, prepping, draping of the patient (PEG TUBES), and with transfer of the patient to and from the procedure room. Assists with documenting results of Breath Testing, Capsule, PH Bravo. Assists physician with advances endoscopy procedures such as
ERCP, PEG
tube placement, etc. Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Role Models exemplary customer service skills including verbal and non-verbal skills and proper phone etiquette. Creates a welcoming environment for all healthcare team members. Provides safe and effective patient care. Must have the ability to remain focused in stressful situations and understand and perform multiple tasks quickly. Basic knowledge of emergency medical care and equipment required. Professional Experience Previous Patient Care Tech, Certified Nursing Assistant or EMT-B experience preferred. Education High School Diploma or equivalent strongly preferred. In addition, ONE of the following is preferred: completion of a certified nurse assistant (CNA) program, EMT-B or EMT-P one year in an Associate Degree in Nursing program Completion of SGNA Associates Program Relevant experience to be considered in place of the above Licensure, Certification, Registration Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required. Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
