Full Job Description Job Objective :
The Clinical Training and Skills Development Coordinator is a key leadership role responsible for managing onboarding, clinical training, and ongoing skills development for Critical Care nursing staff. This position plays a critical part in supporting new graduate integration through a structured Critical Care training pathway, maintaining staff competencies, and promoting safe, standardized practices in the Critical Care Unit (CCU). In partnership with nursing leadership, this role also oversees the administrative infrastructure of education programs, ensuring effective documentation of competencies, regulatory training compliance, and clinical skill development. Additionally, the Clinical Training and Skills Development Coordinator directly supports workforce planning by partnering on hiring decisions, onboarding, performance evaluations, and corrective action processes. Through this comprehensive scope, the role ensures the sustained competency, compliance, and professional growth of the perioperative team, with a strong focus on advancing patient safety, staff engagement, and departmental quality outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Workforce Development & Strategic Onboarding Directs the design, execution, and continuous enhancement of an accelerated onboarding track for new graduates entering the CCU, ensuring alignment with departmental staffing strategies and performance expectations. Manages and oversees the full new graduate program lifecycle, coordinating timelines, resources, and integration into broader departmental orientation, while holding staff and preceptors accountable for successful completion and competency milestones. Strategically partners with HR, academic institutions, and external training programs to develop and sustain a robust pipeline of qualified CCU personnel, proactively addressing future workforce needs and supporting succession planning initiatives Clinical Education & Professional Development Designs, implements, and oversees comprehensive competency-based training programs that align with Critical Care best practices, hospital strategic objectives, and regulatory requirements. Leads the planning and execution of mandatory annual skills fairs, in-services, and continuing education initiatives, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and meet departmental performance goals. Supports cross-training initiatives and advancement programs to enhance workforce flexibility, drive staff engagement, and support succession planning. Provides high-level clinical expertise and operational leadership during high-risk procedures, critical events, and new technology deployments, coordinating staff preparedness and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. Evaluates education resource needs, manages related budgets or material allocations, and makes recommendations to leadership for investments that advance staff development and patient care quality Able to lead Nursing Staff in new technology and Critical Care Skills (i.e.
ECMO, CRRT
) Administrative & Program Oversight Oversees and manages centralized tracking systems for clinical competencies, orientation checklists, certification renewals, and education compliance for all Critical Care staff, ensuring these systems are accurate, current, and audit-ready at all times. Directs the scheduling, monitoring, and enforcement of timely completion of mandatory training, preceptorship evaluations, and department-specific skills validations, holding staff and preceptors accountable for meeting established standards. Analyzes onboarding data, program effectiveness, and retention trends, preparing formal reports and strategic recommendations for senior leadership to drive staffing plans, process improvements, and resource allocation. Oversight of scheduling, attendance compliance, integrity, and regulatory readiness for all educational activities, proactively identifying and correcting gaps to safeguard accreditation. Leads the design and implementation of robust metrics that quantify the impact of education initiatives on patient safety, staff performance, and departmental quality outcomes, using these insights to shape future training priorities and support high-level decision-making. Leadership & Collaboration Partners with Critical Care leadership, quality teams, and educators across units to advance organizational learning, high-reliability practices, and departmental strategic goals. Leads or co-leads staff interviews and selection processes, actively participating in hiring decisions to ensure alignment with departmental standards and long-term staffing strategies. Conducts training progress evaluations and makes formal recommendations for clinical progression, additional support, remediation, or, when necessary, separation based on performance and competency outcomes. Contributes to annual department planning, budget formulation, and workforce forecasting, ensuring education and competency initiatives align with operational priorities and financial targets. Serves as a primary liaison between clinical operations and regulatory/accreditation teams during surveys and readiness assessments, coordinating staff preparation, overseeing documentation audits, and addressing compliance gaps in real time. Provides leadership in resolving complex team or workflow issues, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and shared ownership of patient safety and quality outcomes.
Non-Essential Duties:
A. Support interdepartmental initiatives aimed at improving staff engagement, recognition, and professional development. B. Assist with organizing or facilitating hospital-wide training fairs, new hire orientations, or interdisciplinary learning events. C. Provide back-up support for documentation audits, skills fair logistics, or administrative tasks during periods of high volume. D. Participate in special projects, task forces, or pilot programs related to clinical training, quality improvement, or workflow optimization. E. Contribute to content development for internal newsletters, bulletin boards, or digital training platforms. F. Attend optional conferences, webinars, or community outreach events to represent the Critical Care and Education Department when approved.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge Strong understanding of critical care nursing standards, and CCRN guideline. Knowledge of regulatory requirements including The Joint Commission (T JC), CDPH, CMS, and OSHA related to critical care. Familiarity with adult learning principles, competency-based training models, and staff development practices. Understanding of electronic medical records learning management systems, and digital competency tracking tools. Awareness of trends and innovations in critical care, infection prevention, and clinical quality improvement. Skills Advanced clinical nursing skills in the critical care environment. Proficient in coordinating and delivering hands-on training and skill-based assessments. Strong written and verbal communication skills for instruction, documentation, and coaching. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and other clinical education platforms. Effective time management, project coordination, and attention to detail. Abilities Ability to assess individual learning needs and adapt training approaches accordingly. Ability to organize, track, and prioritize multiple onboarding and competency workflows concurrently. Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels, promoting a respectful and supportive learning environment. Ability to remain calm and resourceful in high-stress or emergent clinical situations. Ability to interpret and apply clinical protocols and policy updates into daily training practices.
