The Assistant Manager - Clinical Operations plays a key leadership role in supporting that mission by helping oversee day‑to‑day clinical operations on the Medical Surgical (3C) unit at IU Health West. This role supports a culture of compassion, excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement while ensuring our patients receive safe, high‑quality, and patient‑centered care. Position Summary The Assistant Manager partners closely with the Unit Manager to support clinical operations, staff engagement, patient experience, quality outcomes, and workflow efficiency on a 24/7 unit . This position will support our night shift staff with the potential for weekends, and on‑call coverage , to ensure strong leadership presence across all shifts. This role helps maintain a positive team environment, supports continuous improvement, and advances the IU Health mission and the IU Health Way.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Operations Supports daily operational oversight for the Medical Surgical 3C unit. Assists with staffing, scheduling, and workload management to ensure safe and effective care delivery. Reviews and responds to incident reports; supports safety and quality follow‑up. Participates in unit-based workgroups, performance improvement initiatives, and change management. Team Member Engagement Builds strong relationships with team members through rounding, coaching, and communication. Participates in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and staff development. Supports performance management, including coaching conversations and disciplinary processes. Promotes a positive work environment that reflects IU Health values. Quality & Patient Experience Advances evidence-based practice and professional nursing standards. Collaborates with the Unit Manager and interprofessional team to improve quality, safety, and patient experience outcomes. Ensures compliance with regulatory and organizational policies. Qualifications Graduate of accredited school of nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree required. Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license. Required Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies. Leadership certification to be obtained within 2 years of hire. Previous leadership experience (charge nurse, preceptor, coordinator) preferred. Recent clinical experience preferred. We are an equal opportunity employer.
