Job Description

Summary The Patient Placement Specialist is responsible for managing daily patient flow and serves as the central coordination point for all admissions across Parkview Health and its affiliates. Conducts an initial high-level assessment of all incoming admission requests and rapidly initiates emergent transfers when indicated. Accurately identifies the appropriate specialty or service line based on patient condition and facilitates timely physician-to-physician communication to ensure safe clinical handoffs and continuity of care. Working collaboratively with the Point of Entry Case Manager, the Patient Placement Specialist ensures that all patients have verified admission orders and appropriate status reviews. Continuously monitors and forecasts bed availability by evaluating current, predicted, and anticipated transfers and discharges. Patient placement decisions are prioritized according to acuity, bed capacity, staffing resources, and required clinical services. Engages with internal and external interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient flow and ensure uninterrupted access to care across the Parkview Health system. Coordinates all in-house transfers and oversees patient movement, supporting ICU capacity management, operating room throughput, and emergency department decompression to promote overall system efficiency. Responsible for assessing clinical care needs across all patient care areas, prioritizing requests to maintain patient safety at all times. This role also provides oversight and direction to the Bed Coordinator. Education BSN from accredited program required. Acceptable accrediting agencies are Commission on Collegiate Education in Nursing (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA). Licensure/Certification Must have current valid RN licensure in the state of Indiana. Experience Must have at least five to ten years of medical or surgical nursing experience. Critical Care experience preferred. Experience with bed tracking, scheduling, and ED software preferred. Experience in precertification, utilization, or case management desirable.
