Job Title:
Ophthalmology Surgery Coordinator Job Details Job Type:
Full-time (Monday - Friday)
Location:
McPherson, KS (In-person) Job Summary The Surgery Coordinator assists in surgery scheduling, counseling of patients, and the completion of all associated forms and certifications. This role is a vital bridge between our patients, the surgeon, and external medical facilities, ensuring a seamless and supportive experience from the initial surgical recommendation through post-operative care.
Job Duties & Responsibilities Patient Greeting & Intake:
Greet patients, determine their needs, and respond accordingly. Assist in screening patient phone calls or walk-ins and answering patient questions.
Surgical Scheduling:
Schedule all office and hospital surgeries along with pre-op and post-op follow-up appointments. Contact appropriate personnel at the hospital or surgery center to schedule blocked time for the surgeon, order appropriate supplies, and reserve required equipment.
Patient Counseling:
Counsel patients regarding surgery and surgical insurance both in-office and by telephone. Initiate financial arrangements for patients when necessary.
Insurance & Certifications:
Verify insurance coverage according to the scheduled procedure (including pre-certifications, second opinions, authorizations, and pre-determinations). Obtain all required certifications for surgery.
Surgical Documentation:
Prepare consent forms for patient signature for specific surgical procedures. Prepare surgical orders with clinical data for the physician to complete and sign, and deliver orders to the hospital.
Patient Compliance:
Contact patients and assure their compliance with pre-op orders.
Coding & Billing Collaboration:
Develop an understanding and maintain currency in coding and third-party surgical procedures. Code and post surgical orders upon completion of procedures. Work closely with Insurance, Accounts Receivable, and Patient Relations to ensure the use of correct coding.
Industry Relations:
Maintain contact with appropriate Medicare and other third-party representatives to aid in the interpretation of regulations and problem resolution.
Optometric Liaison:
Serve as a liaison between MEP and co-managing optometrists. Ensure that co-managing release forms are signed by patients if applicable.
Team Communication:
Ensure the department supervisor is aware of any problems or changes, and perform other job-related tasks as requested.
Job Qualifications Communication:
Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with patients, families, and medical staff.
Professional Judgment:
Ability to work accurately and display good judgment under pressure.
Experience:
Previous ophthalmic office experience is highly preferred.
Core Knowledge:
Must possess at least a foundational knowledge of surgical procedures, medical terminology, insurance benefits, and insurance processing.
Physical Demands:
Subject to standard medical office working conditions and physical demands (see General Conditions).
