Job Description

Title:
Health Unit Clerk Department:
Nursing General summary The Health Unit Clerk will under general supervision of nursing in an inpatient/hospital setting provide clerical and receptionist support in a compassionate, mature, sympathetic and professional manner at all times. The Hospital Unit Clerk assist the nurses in their day-to-day recording and charting of medical administrative information in accordance with current Federal, State and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the medical/clinical record and to ensure that the medical/clinical record of the patient is maintained in an informative and descriptive manner, adequately reflecting the services rendered. The Hospital Unit Clerk works under the direct supervision of the Charge Nurse during their assigned shift. The Hospital Unit Clerk is also supervised by the Departmental Nursing Leadership including the Director of Nursing and the Chief Nursing Officer related to their scope of responsibility. Duties and responsibilities 1. Answers the unit telephone and takes and relays messages as required. 2. Receives visitors and directs them as appropriate. 3. Provides assistance to the nursing personnel, medical staff, patients and visitors. 4. Coordinates nursing unit and interdepartmental communications. 5. Prepares and maintains patient information, records and files. 6. Provides other clerical support, such as copying materials, obtaining medical records, ordering tests/procedures and transportation. 7. Orders/manages supplies and equipment for the unit. 8. Prioritizes daily work and makes adjustments. 9. Performs other related duties as assigned. 10. Copies/scans information, such as temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressures, weights, into medical record. 11. Wave testing and simple vital signs. 12. Arranges for the transfer of patients on the unit to other units. 13. Processes resident admission and discharge forms. 14. Completes Post-Admission and Discharge Audits under the direction of the departmental management. 15. Completes census forms. 16. Distributes mail, newspapers and delivers (flowers, etc.) to the patients. 17. Assists with inventory of resident belongings, ensuring compliance at admission and upon discharge. 18. Is knowledgeable of the Patient's Bill of Rights/Governing Principles and endeavors to promote it. 19. Place dietary orders for diet upon admission and ongoing. 20. Must consistently display and model the hospitality behaviors. 21. The ability to interact effectively with people who have widely differing backgrounds. 22. Must have excellent communication skills in order to serve as the vital link between physicians, nursing staff, various departments, patients and visitors. 23. Must possess a pleasant and professional disposition in dealing with the public. 24. Be able to pay close attention to detail and excellent following-through on work tasks. 25. The ability to handle a multitude of tasks at one time. 26. Good clerical skills, keeps work area efficient and organized. 27. Be reliable and dependable. 28. Have the ability to follow instructions, oral and written, because patient's welfare depends upon the exactness with which they are carried out. 29. Be knowledgeable of the approved policies and procedures. 30. Shall be organized to meet and maintain standards of non-clinical services. 31. Must have knowledge of medical terminology. 32. Be accurate. 33. Have initiative. 34. Must be constantly alert to whatever is happening on the unit. 35. Must be reliable, not only in being on duty when scheduled and on time, but also must be dependable about performing assigned tasks promptly and correctly without being told to do so. 36. Have problem-solving skills. 37. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality about the affairs of patients and staff. 38. Participates in rounding and must have positive attitude and excellent customer service skills. Educational requirements 1. High school diploma or GED 2. Current BLS Experience At least one year of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Specific requirements 1.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, interpret and evaluate information. Ability to write clearly and cohesively and to present information effectively both orally and in writing. 2.
Reasoning Ability:
Good organization skills and ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. 3.
Physical Demands:
Job requires regular sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, writing, and carrying charts, food, trays, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, implements or office equipment; talk and hear; stand and walk, reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel. Employee must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and be able to assist an adult weighing 100-200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may be required to move chairs, beds, and medical equipment, move patients in bed (with or without assistance) and to change bed linens, help clients from floor to chair or bed, and assist with bathing. 4.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, exposure to infectious diseases, and transmission of airborne disease. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 6. Job offer is contingent upon results of pre-employment drug screen and compliance with Annual Influenza vaccination and TB test requirements unless documentation of medically contraindications are provided.
