- Plant Health Care Supervisor, Maintenance Department Plant Health Care Supervisor Whitmores is a family owned business operating on the east end of Long Island, NY since 1945. Our firm specializes in high-end residential landscape work ranging from design, installation, gardens, maintenance, carpentry, masonry, irrigation, tree care, and a tree farm and greenhouse operation. We are currently looking for a Plant Health Care Supervisor. As a Plant Health Care Supervisor with our Tree Farm team, you will play a vital role in maintaining, diagnosing, and improving the health and aesthetics of trees, shrubs, and plant material across our two Long Island based farms. You will apply scientific plant care practices, diagnose plant health issues, execute integrated pest and disease management strategies, and support overall plant health and performance. Responsibilities Conduct regular inspections and scouting of farms and greenhouses to assess plant health and detect early signs of pest infestations, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, or stress. Identify plant species, common pests, diseases, and physiological disorders accurately in the field. Collect samples, document findings with photos, and maintain detailed diagnostic records. Apply integrated pest management (IPM) solutions, including foliar sprays, injectable treatments, deep-root fertilization, organic and conventional pesticides, and soil amendments appropriate for each situation. Mix and apply fertilizers, pesticides, and biological controls according to
EPA, NYS
regulations and label instructions. Perform plant maintenance tasks such as pruning diseased limbs, wound care, soil remediation, root collar excavations, watering plans, staking, and other care techniques. Safely operate company vehicles, sprayers, injectors, air spade equipment, and other specialized tools used in plant health care. Maintain and clean all equipment, tools, and PPE, ensuring proper calibration and storage. Maintain accurate treatment logs, material usage records, application notices, safety materials, and site conditions reports as required. Collaborate with plant buyer, farm manager, farm sales team, greenhouse manager and others on the internal team to coordinate needs, scheduling and ensure quality service. Help to create comprehensive maintenance manuals by providing Plant Health Care approaches, schedules, and other information. Follow all company safety protocols, OSHA standards, and environmental regulations in chemical handling and fieldwork. Participate in ongoing training, certification preparation, and professional development to stay current on best practices in plant health care and agriculture. Lead and manage spray technicians. Contribute to the growth and development of the Tree Farm. Assist with field plant identification and plant labeling. Primarily field-based work in East Hampton NY and Riverhead NY. Require travel between sites, weekends and/or overtime during peak seasons Qualifications 1-3 years of relevant experience in landscaping, horticulture, nursery work, or plant health care. Previous field experience with plant diagnostics and treatment applications preferred. Valid Driver's License with clean driving record (required). NYS Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator/Technician (Category 3A or relevant) preferred or must be willing to obtain within the first year. Certifications or coursework from industry bodies (e.g., ISA Arborist Certification, TCIA Plant Health Care Technician, horticulture certificates) are a plus. Strong plant identification and diagnostic skills. Knowledge of plant disease cycles, pest biology, IPM principles, and soil fertility. Good communication skills for team collaboration. Ability to lift up to 50+ lbs, work outdoors in varied weather conditions, and perform physical tasks. Competent use of mobile devices and digital software for documentation and scheduling is a plus. Field-based position serving company properties Seasonal overtime is required during peak application periods Exposure to fertilizers, pesticides, and outdoor elements (PPE provided) Company will provide training and support toward obtaining and maintaining required licenses and certifications
