Description Job Summary:
The Patient Safety Coordinator is a highly skilled registered nurse responsible for leading advancing and sustaining a culture of safety across the organization. This role serves as a clinical safety expert, system thinker, educator, and change agent who proactively identifies risks, drives multidisciplinary performance improvement, and ensures adherence to generally accepted practice standards. The coordinator uses advanced clinical knowledge, data analysis, and facilitation skills to influence safe, high-reliability care throughout system.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversees the intake, triage, and investigation of safety events, near misses, and potential serious safety events using standardized HPI methodologies (e.g., Press Ganey 3-meeting root cause analysis model, RCA2, apparent cause analysis (ACA), FMEA, cause mapping). Serves as a subject matter expert for safe clinical practices, human error mechanisms, safety culture, and event prevention. Collaborate with leadership, providers, and frontline teams to establish strategies that reduce risk and enhance patient outcomes. Provides education and coaching to clinical and non-clinical staff on patient safety principles, event reporting, error prevention tools, and best practices. Fosters an environment of psychological safety that encourages transparent reporting and learning. Helps coordinate data submission to relevant Patient Safety Organizations (Press Ganey PSO and Child�s Health PSO). Additional responsibilities may include projects to identify and manage improvement opportunities for key operational and clinical initiatives.
Education:
Required:
Active Registered Nurse (RN)
Preferred:
Bachelor�s degree in nursing
Experience:
Required:
7-10 years of acute care or critical care bedside experience Evidence of unit leadership (charge nurse, clinical staff leader, assistant nurse manager, preceptor) Demonstrated ability to lead improvement activities Proficient in computer and internet skills, specifically MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred:
Previous experience with MS Visio, pivot tables, other information, and data analysis tools. Experience with use of improvement science tools (e.g., PDCA/PDSA cycles, Key Driver Diagrams, Process Maps) desired, however department will train Experience with facilitation in process improvement (PI) projects Strong public speaking skills Understanding of accreditation and regulatory requirements Familiarity with
ISO 9001
