Job Description

The Au.

D. externship position at Nationwide Children's Hospital provides the below opportunities for a student under the direct supervision of a licensed audiologist(s):
  • Make Clinical Decisions Based on National Clinical Standard
  • Perform and Interpret Diagnostic Audiometric Evaluations using Age-Specific Criteria
  • Perform and Interpret Immittance Testing
  • Perform and Interpret Behavioral Observation/Visual Reinforcement Audiometry
  • Perform and Interpret Newborn Hearing Screenings and Assessments
  • Perform and Interpret Electrophysiological Testing
  • Perform and Interpret Central Auditory Testing
  • Conduct Hearing Aid Evaluations and Prescribe Appropriate Amplification
  • Fitting and Verification of Amplification Including Subjective and Objective Outcome Measures
  • Assist/Perform Cochlear Implant Evaluation and Programming
  • Counsel Patient/ Family based on the Results of Testing
  • Work Collaboratively As Part of a Hearing Healthcare Team
Makes Appropriate Referrals To Physicians, Speech Language Pathologists, Educational Specialists, And Others Minimum Physical Requirements:
The following are required constantly: hearing, seeing, finger dexterity, sitting, standing, and walking. Pushing and lifting up to 25 pounds are required occasionally.

  • Basic understanding of audiometric evaluations
  • Basic understanding of immittance testing Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Pediatric assessments including:
  • VRA
  • CPA
  • Standard audiometry
  • Newborn hearing screening
  • OAE
  • ABR

Nationwide Children's Hospital is hosting a virtual information session about our 4th year externship opportunity to provide prospective externs and universities with information about our program and allow time for questions about our site! Our current 4th year will also be in attendance to answer questions about their experience. The session will be on Thursday, July 16th at 12:00 PM EST and is a virtual webinar.   • 3 letters of recommendation needed at minimum
  • All applications will be subject to an initial review process once submitted. If selected, applicants will be contacted to schedule a first round phone interview. Following the phone interviews, a select group will then be scheduled for a second round virtual interview (subject to change per hospital policies at the time).
