- Registers, orders, and accessions pathology specimens into computer systems.
- Performs specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical, and body fluid specimens.
In MSD:
Performs Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing.In FL:
If certified for QIHC, may perform IHC testing. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.- Follows established procedures to collect and process biological specimens for analysis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to prepare tissue specimens to confirm patient diagnoses [Required]
- Ability to perform complex histological procedures, record and analyze data, and maintain/repair instruments [Required]
- Up-to-date knowledge of specimen handling, ranging from accession to specimen storage [Required]
- Knowledge of medical terminology [Required]
- Ability to maintain safety standards and comply with government regulations in laboratory practices [Required]
- Up-to-date knowledge of contemporary as well as general histology practice [Required]
- Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]
- Technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, cover slipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens performed in department or work area assigned [Required]
- Ability to assist pathologist with frozen section preparations [Required]
- Ability to utilize automated Histology equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers' instructions [Required]
- Ability to apply accurately learned computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices [Required]
- Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner [Required]
- Ability to read text and numbers in English, and comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, under supervision [Required]
- Ability to exercise mature judgment and handle confidential information within applicable regulations [Required]
Education:
- High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
- Associate's [Preferred]
Field of Study:
- Associate's in related field in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) OR equivalent education experience.
Work Experience:
- 1+ year of technical experience as a histology technician/technologist in a histology laboratory setting [Preferred]
