LOCATION
Temporarily Coral Gables, Florida 33146 Moving to Miramar, Florida 33025 by the end of 2026.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The listing of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded as the DTO may deem necessary from time to time.
  • Is committed to continuous Quality Improvement throughout the patient specimen journey from specimen receipt to final reporting.
  • Leads the technical staff in performing grossing, tissue processing, embedding, cutting, IHC, and staining of surgical pathology and cytology samples. Is expected to maintain bench competency in all areas to support evolving workload and coverage gaps.
  • Acts as a resource and subject matter expert for specimen grossing, IHC, and other technical issues.
  • Communicates and collaborates with each of the Pathologists to maintain and enhance quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction.
  • Identifies and resolves problems with test results, equipment, or staff, and communicates effectively with other departments, the Technical and Medical Directors, and medical professionals.
  • Assists the LD/TD in developing, validating, and implementing new procedures and technologies within the department.
Is responsible for the coordination and performance of laboratory technical staff within the departments, including: Assists DTO in the recruitment of departmental staff. Performs all aspects of personnel management including, but not limited to,, staff training and technical competency, ensuring the appropriateness of daily working and training schedules, coordination and department coverage due to staffing gaps. Ensuring that technical staff are appropriately scheduled to support MediPath physician's clinical and technical performance expectations. Implementation and adherence to standard operating policies & procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance program (including QA manual). Ensures and develops departmental standard operating procedures which accurately reflect the current process and best practice workflows. Establishing and maintaining productivity standards for grossing, embedding, cutting, and IHC and monitoring staff performance to the established standards. Establishing and maintaining service anchors for daily slide delivery times to pathologists. Fosters intradepartmental support and collaboration. Acts as a liaison between the DTO/LD/TD and the departmental staff, helps manage their staff's technical concerns, resource utilization and clinical activities, and coordinates optimal performance (quality and productivity). Reviews staffing and equipment requirements, materials (reagents and supplies) needed, and selection of personnel hired and IVD products used. Works with TO but has ultimate responsibility for inventory control within the department. Works with DTO but has ultimate responsibility for the maintainance and preventive maintenance for all departmental instrumentation and equipment. Facilitates and ensures that staff evaluations are completed in a timely fashion and that training records for all departmental staff are appropriately maintained. Maintains reports that detail departmental testing volumes for statistical purposes and to ensure that the department is properly staffed to accommodate workloads. Establishes and maintains updated cost-per-reportable result calculations (CPRR) for tests performed in the department and monitors departmental labor and materials utilization to ensure optimal efficiency. Works with
DTO/LD/TD
but has ultimate responsibility for laboratory technical staff and supports remedial action to correct deficiencies. o Works with DTO but has ultimate responsibility for ensuring that adequate and proper safety equipment and materials are available and that laboratory personnel have been properly trained in their use. o Ensures that the laboratory environment is safe and compliant with all relevant safety regulations, and that staff follow all safety protocols.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
Coordinates departmental adherence to CLIA and CAP regulations and inspection readiness. Responsible for the enrollment in proper CAP (or equivalent) proficiency testing programs, receiving proficiency testing specimens, administering the proficiency testing program including the review of proficiency testing reports and corrective actions as needed. Develops and maintains quality control and quality assurance programs to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results, and ensure the lab adheres to CLIA regulations. Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and proper functioning of departmental equipment, ensuring it is in good working order and meets safety standards. Responsible for preparing Florida-DOH or other regulatory bodies. Evaluates and selects chemicals, and biologicals for clinical use and establishes monitoring systems for handling, processing, and storing these supplies and reagents. Ensures MSDS sheets are available for all hazardous materials used in the department and reviews annually. Ensures that departmental waste management policies are followed. o Responsible for keeping the department abreast of new and/or changing regulations and technologies such as but not limited to voice-text, digital modalities, new/emerging IHC markers, and microwave tissue processing.
  • Responsible for the technical oversight of the LIS and serves as liaison to IT to ensure administrative issues are identified and resolved.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of an Associate's Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent recognized under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines for high complexity testing, Licensed by the State of Florida as a Histology Supervisor and//or Pathology Assistant (PA) with a Board of Certification (BOC) from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent. Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Grossing or Histology Technician or Histotechnologist and/or Two (2) years' experience as a Grossing or Histology Supervisor. Prior management or supervision of direct reports required Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language at a level necessary for effective job performance, exercising correct English usage, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and communicate effectively, tactfully and positively in both oral and written form. Bilingual Spanish skills preferred. Must be able to use independent judgment, to interact productively and positively with patients, physicians, providers, technologists, and staff. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills while acting as the laboratory liaison with extra departmental coordinators and staff. Must be able to balance and prioritize multiple projects with a great attention to detail. High level of critical thinking skills. Self-motivated, efficient, and very organized. Proficient computer skills in Word, Excel, spreadsheets and typing.
REQUIRIMENTS
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test (ISHIHARA TEST)
  • Proficiency and/or familiarity with computers, computer programs, information systems, scanners, forceps, rulers, tissue dyes, scalpel or razor blades, microtomes, cryostats, water baths, slide rack, tissue processor, drying ovens, automatic strainers, cover slippers, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Laboratory/Office work environment with exposure to various chemicals and equipment. Prolonged sitting, frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Safety equipment and personal protective equipment provided and required. Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate office and laboratory equipment. On-call status after normal hours of operations. Some travel required (conferences, client/prospective client visits). Laboratory Setting; exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, blood borne pathogens, chemical hazards and sharp instruments.
